TxDOT to Apply Brine in Anticipation of Continued Freezing Temps

December 1, 2020 - Crews will apply a brine mixture to elevated surfaces today in Nacogdoches and Shelby counties ahead of possible freezing temps and expected rain tonight.

Motorists should reduce speed and allow crews to work through these areas. Motorists should stay alert for possible icy patches on rural roads and reduce speed or avoid driving in severe winter weather conditions.

November 16, 2020 - As temperatures in East Texas turn colder, TxDOT crews are already busy preparing for the season’s first taste of winter weather, which could include icy roadways.

TxDOT Alert US 59 North of Garrison Shut Down After 18-Wheeler Collision (Updated 11:25am)

US 59 Update at 11:25am: US 59 North of Garrison has reopened to two-way traffic only as crews continue to clear a heavy truck crash. Motorists are being directed through one northbound and one southbound lane. Motorists should reduce speed and obey all traffic control.

TX Transportation Commission Approves New Projects for District

September 28, 2020 – Texas Transportation Commissioners on Thursday approved more than $450.3 million in new construction projects statewide, with more than $3.8 million approved for new construction in the Lufkin District.

More than $1.4 million was earmarked for various roadway improvements through the nine-county Lufkin District that will consist of profile pavement markings.

New Speed Limit Signs Being Posted in Shelby County

September 8, 2020 - New speed limit signs are being set on US 96 after recent approval by the Texas Transportation Commission.

The newly set speed limit on US 96 will be reduced from 75 mph to 70 mph from the City of Center city limits to the San Augustine County line in Shelby County.

TxDOT Names New Lufkin District Engineer

September 3, 2020 - The Texas Department of Transportation on Tuesday named Kelly O. Morris, P.E., to serve as the Lufkin District Engineer.

Kelly began her career at TxDOT as a summer employee in 1993 and later began working full time as an Engineering In Training in the Livingston Area Office. Kelly graduated from Texas A&M University in 1995 with a Civil Engineering degree and obtained her Professional Engineer’s License in 2000.

TxDOT Alert: Seal Coating Aug. 13, Aug. 17 on US 59

August 12, 2020 - TxDOT crews will be seal coating Thursday, August 13, and Monday, August 17, in Shelby County on US 59 from SH 87 to the Rusk County line. Motorists are urged to reduce speed and obey all traffic control.

School Zone Lights Being Activated for Back to School

August 10, 2020 – School zone flashers are being activated this week throughout the Lufkin District for the new school year. Drivers are urged to be cautious and alert as they drive through school zones.

While the return to school might be different for many students and teachers this year, TxDOT wants to remind motorists that state law requires drivers to reduce speed to the posted school zone speed limit while flashers are activated. Be prepared to stop during peak travel hours as traffic is directed before and after school hours.
