November 5, 2018 - November 2018 marks grim milestone of more than 66,000 roadway deaths since 2000
Not all anniversaries are happy and Nov. 7 is one of the saddest of all. Since Nov. 7, 2000, at least one person has died on Texas roadways every single day. In an effort to end this deadly 18-year milestone, the Texas Department of Transportation, through its #EndTheStreakTX campaign, reminds drivers it’s a shared responsibility among roadway users and engineers to keep our roads safe.
October 12, 2018 Lufkin – Motorists traveling US 69 South between Huntington and Zavalla in Angelina County will see lower speed limit signs placed next week indicating new work zone speed limits.
September 8, 2018 - US 59 Closure: Clean up could continue until mid-day on US 59 just south of Tenaha after an early morning crash. All lanes remain closed. Detours are in place. Expect some delays.
August 17, 2018 Lufkin – The Texas Department of Transportation is hosting a traffic safety grant interest meeting for agencies that could benefit from additional funding.
August 8, 2018 Lufkin – Schools are preparing to begin the new school year throughout the nine-county Lufkin District and TxDOT wants to remind the public of the law regarding driving through a school zone and near school buses.
Motorists should stay alert to flashing lights in school zones and be prepared to slow down to the posted speed limit when lights are activated. Be prepared to stop during peak travel hours as traffic is directed before and after school hours.
August 3, 2018 – The nine county Lufkin District has many work zones set up through construction and maintenance projects. Motorists are asked to respect TxDOT work zones, reduce speed to the posted suggested speed limit and stay alert for moving equipment and workers. It is illegal to remove or drive around a TxDOT traffic control device, including barrels or cones. Obey all traffic control including lead cars and flaggers throughout a work zone.
July 27, 2018 - Speed limits in Tenaha, in Shelby County, are scheduled to be lowered following a recommendation from TxDOT and approval by Tenaha City Commissioners.
The speed limit on FM 2695 will be lowered to 45 miles per hour from 55 miles per hour from FM 947 to Loop 157.
July 23, 2018 Lufkin – Work is scheduled in Angelina and San Jacinto counties on Wednesday and Thursday that will cause traffic to be rerouted.
The US 59/SL 287 Southbound Direct Connector at South First Street in Lufkin will be closed Wednesday afternoon from 1 pm to 5 pm for follow-up inspections to the bridge. Traffic will be detoured to the South First Street exit ramp for motorists needing to access US 59 South/South First Street.
July 20, 2018 Lufkin – TxDOT crews are busy throughout the nine county Lufkin District with construction and maintenance projects. Motorists will encounter work zones throughout the district and should prepare for delays and reduce speed to the advised work zone speed limit. Drivers should stay alert and respect all traffic control devices, watch for flaggers and stopped or slow moving traffic as they drive through a TxDOT work zone.
