Forest Service Offering Temporary Jobs to Qualified Veterans

March 2, 2017 - The U.S. Forest Service is seeking qualified veterans for paid training in prescribed burns and wildland fire suppression for temporary positions.

Veterans selected for the eight-week program must be 18 years or older with an honorable military discharge and would complete a two-week basic firefighter training course on the Ocala National Forest in Florida. Including training, the program runs from May 14, 2017 through July 22, 2017, and possibly longer. Positions are available in Yellowpine, Zavalla, Decatur, Ratcliff and New Waverly.

U.S. Forest Service Waives Day-Use Fees for Presidents’ Day

February 13, 2017 - The National Forests and Grasslands in Texas is waiving day-use fees at recreation sites February 20 for Presidents’ Day.

“Our public lands are open to everyone, and we hope these free days offer an incentive to all people to visit any of the 193 million acres of land held in trust for their enjoyment and use,” U.S. Forest Service Chief Tom Tidwell said.

U.S. Forest Service Warns Drone Users to Steer Away from Fire

February 17, 2017 - Flying drones is a fast-growing hobby, but Forest Service officials are warning that drones are becoming a fast-growing problem for firefighters doing their job.

While unmanned aerial vehicles, or drones, may be flown in many places in the National Forests and Grasslands in Texas (NFGT), there are areas where they can’t be flown by federal law and in accordance with FAA guidelines.

Forest Service Plans Controlled Burns to Reduce Fire Risk, Improve Forest Health

January 11, 2017 - U.S. Forest Service fire personnel will soon begin controlled burns in the national forests and will continue the burns during the next few months.

Despite recent rainfall, the forest is still recovering from the summer dry spell and controlled burning dramatically reduces the chances of a wildfire spreading out of control.

Taylor Named Supervisor for National Forests, Grasslands in Texas

November 22, 2016 - The U.S. Forest Service has selected William “Eddie” Taylor as forest supervisor for the National Forests and Grasslands in Texas. He previously served as forest supervisor for the Kisatchie National Forest in Louisiana.
 
Regional Forester Tony Tooke said, “Eddie brings almost 30 years’ experience to the National Forests and Grasslands in Texas. I am pleased that he will be staying in the Southern Region and am looking forward to continuing to work with him in his new role.”
 

Forest Service Waives Day-Use Fees for Veterans Day

October 27, 2016 - Many recreation areas and other venues in the National Forests and Grasslands in Texas will be free to the public on Nov. 11 in honor of Veterans Day.
 
“We honor our veterans each Nov. 11 and every other day of the year,” said U.S. Forest Service Chief Tom Tidwell. “We hope that this time will serve as a way for our veterans and other visitors to find our national forests and grasslands as a year-round respite, a place where they can take time out for themselves.”

Deer and Hog Hunt for Persons with Disabilities, Dec. 9-10

September 28, 2016 - The 8th Annual Angelina Wheelin’ Sportsmen Event for people with disabilities will be December 9-10 at Stephen F. Austin Experimental Forest, Winston Tree Farm and Alazon Wildlife Management Area. 
 
The two-day deer and hog hunt is sponsored by the National Wild Turkey Federation’s Wheelin’ Sportsmen program, U.S. Forest Service, National Forests and Grasslands in Texas, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, April AWOL Chapter and Pineywoods Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation.
 

Forest Service Waives Fees for National Public Lands Day

September 19, 2016 - Many recreation areas and other venues in the National Forest will be free to the public on Saturday, Sept. 24 in celebration of National Public Lands Day.

“National Public Lands Day is a great opportunity for families to visit our national forests, experience the beauty of fall foliage, and perhaps be motivated to join in with other volunteers and help us restore America’s precious natural resources,” said U.S. Forest Service Chief Tom Tidwell.

U.S. Forest Service Officials Urge Hunters to Use Caution in the Woods

September 1, 2016 - As gun deer hunting season begins, U.S. Forest Service officials are reminding hunters of guidelines designed to make their hunting trips to national forests safe and enjoyable, while sustaining the health of the forests.

Earlier this year, heavy rains and flooding damaged many roads in the forests and grasslands. While most roads have been repaired, some remain impassable and are closed. Check with the Ranger’s Office to make sure your favorite hunter camp is open.
