Wild, Scenic Rivers Public Meetings Postponed

September 5, 2017 - The National Forests and Grasslands in Texas is postponing meetings on Wild and Scenic River eligibility and Wildernesses due to widespread flooding caused by Hurricane Harvey.

The meetings, scheduled for Lufkin and San Augustine on Sept 12 and 14 have been postponed, according to Rob Potts, Natural Resources and Planning staff officer.

“Our main concern is with people recovering from the devastation of Hurricane Harvey,” he said. “As lives and homes are put back together, we will reschedule these meetings.”

National Forests in Texas Camping Fees Waived for Those Displaced by Flooding

September 3, 2017 - The Southern Region of the USDA Forest Service is waiving fees and making campgrounds available for individuals displaced by the recent flooding in Texas and other states.

Like several areas along the Gulf Coast, many National Forests were impacted by the recent storm. Some of the region’s campgrounds are closed due to the flooding.

National Forest Recreation Areas, Trails Closed for Public Safety

August 28, 2017 - All recreation areas and trails in the Sam Houston, Davy Crockett, Angelina and Sabine National Forests remain closed as a public safety precaution until the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey passes, according to Forest Supervisor Eddie Taylor.

Taylor emphasized that national forest campgrounds have older trees that are susceptible to falling when soils become saturated. 

National Forest Closing Campgrounds, Trails as Hurricane Harvey Approaches

August 25, 2017 - As Hurricane Harvey approaches the Texas Gulf Coast, Forest Supervisor Eddie Taylor is closing all campgrounds and trails in the Davy Crockett, Angelina and Sabine National Forests.

Sam Houston National Forest sites were closed earlier in the week.

“With potentially high winds, possible tornados and heavy rainfall, the forest is not a safe place to be,” Taylor said. “Recreation areas and trails will remain closed until the storm has passed and our personnel have determined the roads and public areas are safe.”

National Forests, Grasslands in Texas seeks Input on Wild, Scenic Rivers

August 16, 2017 - The National Forests and Grasslands in Texas is holding meetings to get public input on Wild and Scenic River eligibility and Wildernesses as part of its ongoing Forest Plan Revision.

Meetings will be Sept. 12 in Lufkin at the Pitser Garrison Convention Center and Sept. 14 at the San Augustine Chamber of Commerce, 611 W. Columbia St., San Augustine.

Fireworks prohibited in National Forests, Grasslands

June 30, 2017 - As the July 4 holiday weekend approaches, officials with the U.S. Forest Service are reminding the public that fireworks are prohibited in the National Forests and Grasslands in Texas.
 
Despite recent rains, fireworks can create a potentially dangerous fire situation, and Forest Supervisor Eddie Taylor says law enforcement personnel will be watchful again this year.
 

Forest Service Recreation Areas Closed in Preparation for Flooding from Tropical Storm Cindy

June 21, 2017 - The U.S. Forest Service is temporarily closing all recreation areas in the Angelina and Sabine National Forests as a safety precaution due to expected severe flooding from Tropical Storm Cindy.

All recreation areas and trails will be closed for the duration of the storm.

“Weather forecasters are predicting severe flooding and possible rainfall up to 10 to15 inches in some areas,” said Forest Supervisor Eddie Taylor.

Forest Service Waives Day-use Fees for National Get Outdoors Day

June 6, 2017 - The National Forests and Grasslands in Texas is waiving fees at day-use recreation sites June 10 for National Get Outdoors Day.

“We hope this free day offers an incentive to all people to experience the great outdoors in our forests and grasslands,” Forest Supervisor Eddie Taylor said.

Camping fees remain in effect, but day-use fees will be waived on Saturday, June 10 at these recreation areas and trails:

Red Hill Lake Recreation Area Opens for the Season; Vandalism Delayed Opening

May 22, 2017 - Red Hill Lake Recreation Area will be open Thursday, May 25 through Oct. 1 for the summer season.

The delayed opening of Red Hill Lake Recreation Area is a result of vandalism to the electric hookups in January. As a result of the vandalism, electricity will not be available at campsites, according to Kimpton Cooper, Sabine National Forest Ranger.
