Texas Observer Publishes Article Concerning Spread of COVID-19 at Meat Plants (Updated)

April 22, 2020 - The Texas Observer published an article about COVID-19 and its spread among employees of meat plants in rural Texas counties mentioning the Tyson poultry processing plant in Shelby County.

On a Facebook post made on Tyson Foods - Center, TX page, the plant advised it would be shutdown this week due to a construction project. The City of Center did confirm the construction project was planned for this week for well over 3 months as the city has scheduled maintence on the water system to happen during the plants shutdown.

Judge Harbison Updates Commissioners on COVID Cases, Military Involvement (Updated)

April 22, 2020 - The Shelby County Commissioners met Wednesday, April 22, 2020, via Zoom and during the meeting County Judge Allison Harbison informed that military doctors will soon be in the area to offer a drive through testing site in Center.

“We had 69 confirmed positive, we had six people that actually have gone through the process and have recovered and got off of the list. We still have 10 that may be in the hospital, and we've had no deaths reported," said Judge Harbison.

County Appoints Dr. Singson Local Health Authority

April 21, 2020 - Shelby County Commissioners approved the appointment of Dr. Florencio Singson, MD as the Shelby County Local Health Authority on April 15, 2020.

Department of State Health Services contacted Judge Allison Harbison on the need for there to be a designated Shelby County Local Health Authority.

Dr. Florencio Singson has been designated that for several years. Due to an oversight, Judge Harbison explained the appointment ran out. 

Shelby County EM Reports 67 Cases; 6 Recoveries

April 21, 2020 - Shelby County has had 3 new cases reported and one more recovery which brings Shelby County numbers to 67 cases and 6 recoveries. County Judge Allison Harbison received no notice of hospitalizations.


April 20, 2020 - Shelby County Office of Emergency Management was notified Monday afternoon by Texas Dept. of State Health Services (DSHS) of 4 more positive confirmed case of COVID-19 bringing the total case count for Shelby County to 64. DSHS reports that the majority of these cases are community spread and not travel related.

Weather Service Warns of Ping Pong Size Hail

April 19, 2020 - The National Weather Service in Shreveport has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Southeastern Panola County in northeastern Texas, Southeastern Rusk County in northeastern Texas, Northeastern Nacogdoches County in eastern Texas,Shelby County in eastern Texas until 12-noon CDT.

At 1112 AM CDT, a severe thunderstorm was located near Trawick, or 13 miles north of Nacogdoches, moving east at 55 mph.

HAZARD: Ping pong ball size hail and 60 mph wind gusts.

Shelby County Under Severe Thunderstorm Warning

April 19, 2020 - The National Weather Service in Shreveport has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for, Southern De Soto Parish in northwestern Louisiana, Northwestern Sabine Parish in northwestern Louisiana, Eastern Nacogdoches County in eastern Texas, Central Shelby County in eastern Texas, North central San Augustine County in eastern Texas until 11:15 AM CDT.

At 10:33am CDT, a severe thunderstorm was located near Neuville, or 7 miles south of Center, moving northeast at 65 mph.

 HAZARD: 60 mph wind gusts and quarter size hail.
