December 30, 2022 - The intersection of SL 500 and State Highway 7 (SH7) East was the scene of a two-vehicle crash December 15, 2022.

While Center Police Officers investigated the crash, Center Fire Department and Shelby County Sheriff’s Department personnel directed traffic at the scene to help prevent further incidents.

According to Center Police Officer Garrett Rocchi, at around 11am a white 2021 Toyota Tundra pickup truck driven by Kenneth Smith, 40, of Texarkana, Ark. was traveling southeast on SL 500 when he came to the intersection with SH 7 East where a poultry truck hauling chickens was turning left.

Smith proceeded into the intersection and at that time a 2020 Ford F-450 pickup truck driven by Holly Griffin, 46, of Joaquin was eastbound on SH 7 when she saw Smith entered the intersection; however, she was unable to stop in time and collided with the passenger side of the Toyota, causing major damage to both vehicles.

The Toyota spun through a stop sign before coming to rest just south of SH 7 on SL 500 and the Ford came to rest facing west on SH 7.

A tank in the bed of the Toyota carrying bait was ejected and came to rest beside the roadway spilling its contents.

Griffin was transported to Nacogdoches Medical Center - Shelby County Emergency Department for non life threatening injuries. Smith refused treatment at the scene.

No citations were issued at the time of the incident.

December 29, 2022 - The Center Fire Department responded to the Shelby County Sheriff's Department at 2:41am December 15, 2022, due to a report of a fire.

When fire personnel arrived, there was smoke within the building and they began their investigation to determine the source of the smoke.

Eventually it was determined the fire was in the crawl space above the laundry room where the jail joins the Sheriff's Department offices.

According to the Center Fire Department, it appeared the cause of the fire was a combination of an electrical issue and lint that had collected in the crawl space.

Fire personnel broke through metal flashing on the exterior of the building and were able to access some smoldering and flames behind it. They were then able to extinguish the flames and ventilate the building with fans.

Once there was no further threat of fire, the Center Fire Department personnel returned to the station at 4:10am.

December 29, 2022 - The main phone number for Center's City Hall is offline during an internet outage. Please dial 936-598-2615 for City Hall until services are restored.

December 29, 2022 - Emergency conservation measures effected on December 26th are now retracted. The water system has recovered with reductions from excessive use due to customer repairs and actions on several line leaks. While operations have not returned completely to normal tank levels and some water loss remains evident, the system has recovered such that restrictions on use are no longer necessary.

We appreciate all our customers’ assistance and cooperation that prevented system-wide outage over this last winter storm. Our staff continue to work with customers that experienced leaks to reinstate services.

December 27, 2022 - Center Utilities implemented emergency water conservation measures today as the result of continued water demand and water loss from system repairs. This means that all nonessential use is temporarily restricted until such time as the system reaches levels allowing normalized operations. The following uses of water are designated as non-essential or discretionary uses of water:

  • Irrigation of landscape areas including yards, parks, athletic fields, and golf courses.
  • Use of water to wash any motor vehicle, boat, trailer, airplane, or other vehicle.
  • Use of water to wash down any sidewalks, walkways, driveways, parking lots, athletic courts, or buildings or other structures for purposes other than immediate fire protection, other hard surfaced areas. Flushing gutters or permitting water to run or accumulate in any gutter or street.
  • Use of water to fill, refill, or add to any swimming pools or Jacuzzi type pools or any outdoor recreational use of water. Use of water in an outside fountain or pond for aesthetic or scenic purposes, except where necessary to support aquatic life.

While customers and businesses have been impacted from pipe freezing and property damages, the City’s system has not been immune and eight major line problems and other minor leaks have been repaired in the last 36 hours. Staff are also attempting to work with all customers to coordinate with their repairs and be able to resume service to their locations as soon as possible upon completion of repairs.

Beginning December 22nd, several customers had excessive usage from water pipe breaks and many others had damages once pipes thawed on December 24th.

Crews have been working every day to ensure those customers with leaks could be shut off, preventing further damage and allowing for repairs. Additionally, system leaks appeared beginning December 24th particularly in the areas of San Augustine St. and Nacogdoches Hwy. During this entire period the City’s two water plants have operated 24-hours daily to maximize production at well over 3 million gallons per day simply to maintain the system in compliance without significant industrial use. At present, the City’s system is stable and gaining slowly which indicates there remains substantial usage above normal levels. Please notify the Utility office at City Hall if your residence or business location is in need of assistance as well as any apparent leaks along roadways or ditches.

December 27, 2022 - West Shelby County Volunteer Fire Department (WSCVFD) reports having had five call outs over that past week.

The first of these was an 18-wheeler which broke down in front of Excelsior School on the night of the 22nd of December. WSCVFD provided traffic control until it could be cleared.

The same night as the 18-Wheeler a tree fell across all four lanes of traffic at Highway 7 and County Road 1180, the WSCVFD responders cleared the roadway.

On the night of December the 23rd there was a vehicle fire caused by a blown tire on Highway 7 near CR 1240. Fire personnel responded and extinguished the fire and waited for the vehicle to be removed from the roadway.

On the night of Christmas there was a report of a transformer sparking near the intersection of FM 711 and CR 1273. WSCVFD personnel secured the area until REA arrived to fix the problem.

There was a woods fire at 996 County Road 1273 on the night of December 26th. Someone set a fire at a brush pile and it got out of control. WSCVFD responded and put out the fire and made sure it was secured.

December 26, 2022 - Timpson Volunteer Fire Department (TVFD) was called out December 24, 2022, for their fifth house fire of the week at 3:45pm to CR 4667 and CR 4660.

Upon arrival it was discovered that a trash fire had gotten out and reached a dwelling, setting it on fire as well. TVFD began attacking the structure fire, as well as the grass and brush fire simultaneously. The grass and brush fire was approximately 15 acres and additional help was requested with Tenaha VFD responding with brush trucks to assist.

While fighting the fire, at 4:34pm a two-vehicle accident occurred at US Highway 59 and Highway 84, pulling part of the fire department resources to assist with the wreck.

No injuries were reported due to the fire and there was one person transported for injuries due to the accident.
