August 3, 2017 - FM 947 outside of Tenaha was the scene of a single-vehicle crash Thursday, August 3, 2017.

According to Texas Department of Public Safety State Trooper Sean Smith, at 3:10pm a grey 2001 Ford F-150 driven by Edward Rawson, 53, of Tenaha was northbound on FM 947. For an unknown reason he slammed on his brakes and failed to drive in a single lane.

Rawson took faulty evasive action and turned left causing the truck to side skid and travel off the roadway into the barrow ditch where it struck a tree. The Ford came to rest facing south.

ACE EMS arrived at the scene and transported Rawson to Nacogdoches Medical Center in Nacogdoches for treatment of unknown injuries.

A citation was issued for failure to drive in a single lane and the crash remains under investigation. Trooper Smith was assisted at the scene by Troopers Jesse Fountain and Richard Hill. Deputy Tenaha City Marshal Darren Gray also assisted at the scene.

August 2, 2017 - A vehicle crash at the intersection of Nacogdoches Street and Hurst Street in Center was reported to be in part due to the error of a liquefied gas truck driver Tuesday, August 1, 2017.

When the Center Police Department arrived, several ACE EMS ambulances were on scene and EMS were evaluating those involved in the crash.

According to Center Police Officer Brian Wright, at 5:30pm a Toyota Camry SE driven by Jamie Fausett 55, with passenger William Themis, 28, both of Center was traveling westbound on Nacogdoches Street preparing to cross Hurst Street.

At that time, a white Freightliner owned by Airgas hauling a trailer meant to carry liquefied gas and driven by Kelvin Wallace, 60, of Kentucky was southbound on Hurst Street. When Wallace traveled through the red light at the intersection the Freightliner struck the Camry on the passenger side of the car.

No injuries were reported of anyone involved in the crash. No citations have been issued at this time.

Officer Wright was assisted at the scene by Officer Andrew Williams.

August 2, 2017 - The National Weather Service in Shreveport has issued an Urban and Small Stream Flood Advisory for, Shelby County in eastern Texas, Northern San Augustine County in eastern Texas, Southeastern Panola County in northeastern Texas, Northern Sabine County in eastern Texas, Sabine Parish in northwestern Louisiana, Southeastern Rusk County in northeastern Texas, Northeastern Nacogdoches County in eastern Texas until 1:45pm CDT.

At 10:52am CDT, Doppler radar indicated heavy rain that will cause urban and small stream flooding in the advisory area. Up to three to four inches of rain have already fallen.

Some locations that may experience flooding include Carthage, Center, Milam, Many, San Augustine, Zwolle, Tenaha, Timpson, Garrison, Joaquin, Converse, Patroon, Bland Lake, Neuville, Shelbyville, Oak Grove, Huxley, Gary City, Noble and Jericho.  

Precautionary/Preparedness Actions: Turn around, don`t drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles. Keep children away from storm drains, culverts, creeks and streams. Water levels can rise rapidly and sweep children away. A Flood Advisory means river or stream flows are elevated, or ponding of water in urban or other areas is occurring or is imminent.

August 1, 2017 – The Texas Transportation Commission on Thursday approved nearly $488.3 million in new construction projects statewide, with three located in the Lufkin District.

The new projects total $6.8 million and are located in San Augustine, Angelina and Shelby counties. The work includes bridge replacements and right-of-way work.

San Augustine County was awarded a $5.3 million project at the Attoyac River on SH 21. The project includes the removal and replacement of two bridge structures located at the Attoyac River and the Attoyac River Relief. Drewery Construction, Nacogdoches TX, will serve as contractor for the project. No timeline for completion has been determined.

Angelina County was awarded an $890,456 construction project located on US 69, south of Lufkin. The project limits are from FM 844 south of Huntington to FM 1270 south of Zavalla. The work is the beginning phase of a construction project designated to widen the roadway to four lanes. This project will consist of clearing the right of way. R& M Inc., Wellborn, TX will serve as contractor for the project. No timeline for completion has been determined.

Shelby County was awarded a $619,833 construction project located on CR 4059 at Poor Joe Creek, CR 4293 at the tributary of Chicken Bayou and on CR 1440 at the tributary of Irish Creek. The work includes bridge removal and replacements at all three locations. Drewery Construction will serve as contractor for the project. No timeline for completion has been set.

As these projects begin, motorists are urged to stay alert, obey all traffic control devices and prepare for possible delays through work zones. All work schedules are subject to change in inclement weather.

July 31, 2017 - The U.S. Highway 59 overpass in Tenaha was the scene of a single-vehicle rollover crash after a driver misjudged his exit.

According to Deputy Tenaha City Marshal Darren Gray, at 6:04am a grey 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe driven by Robert Alexander Worsham, 39, of Hot Springs, Ark. was southbound on U.S. Highway 59.

Worsham missed his turn and over corrected to the right and as the Tahoe traveled to the exit ramp it struck a guardrail on the left driver's side of the vehicle. He lost control of the Tahoe and it rolled before coming to rest on its top, trapping Worsham inside the vehicle and leaving the Tahoe in the middle of the roadway.

The Tenaha Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to the scene to help extricate Worsham from the Tahoe.

ACE EMS transported Worsham from the scene to Nacogdoches Medical Center - Center Emergency Department for treatment of unknown injuries.

No citations were issued at the time of the crash.

July 31, 2017 - Employees at the Dollar General in Tenaha were startled by a loud bang, and food coolers that were moving away from a wall which got their attention Sunday, July 30, 2017.

According to Deputy Tenaha City Marshal Darren Gray, at 1:30pm an 80-year-old female driving a maroon 2013 Dodge Avenger entered the Dollar General parking lot located on George Bowers Drive. When she attempted to park the vehicle on the side of the building she unintentionally depressed the accelerator instead of the brake.

This caused the Avenger to travel over the sidewalk and travel approximately two feet within the wall of the store. Deputy Marshal Gray arrived on scene followed by ACE EMS personnel who transported the driver to Nacogdoches Medical Center - Center Emergency Department as a precaution.

No citations were reported at the time of the crash.

July 28, 2017 - Bush Brothers & Company is voluntarily recalling certain 28 ounce cans of Brown Sugar Hickory Baked Beans, Country Style Baked Beans and Original Baked Beans because cans may have defective side seams. These side seam defects may affect can integrity and may cause the cans to leak or allow for harmful bacteria to grow inside the product. Bush Brothers found the issue as part of their quality control inspections.

The recalled products were distributed nationwide in retail stores.

This event only affects the flavors and lot codes below. Lot codes are printed on the bottom of the can.

You should not use these products even if the beans do not look or smell spoiled. No illnesses or other adverse consequences have been reported to date in connection with this product.

The recall was initiated after product leakage from the side seams of cans of the above product was detected. Subsequent investigation indicated the problem was caused by a temporary quality issue from Bush's® can supplier. The problem was corrected and no other product is affected.

July 27, 2017 - A collision at the intersection of Loop 500 and State Highway 7 sparked a secondary crash on Friday, July 21, 2017.

According to Center PD officer Spencer Anderson, at 3pm a 2006 black Ford F-150 driven by Jody Martin, 29, of Center was northbound on Loop 500 as he approached State Highway 7 East.

At that time Thomas Thompson, 70, of La. was driving westbound in a 2012 black Ford Focus when he failed to yield right of way for oncoming traffic in a four-way intersection and crashed into the Focus.

Following the initial collision, the Focus spun off the roadway to the right where it struck a light pole with the rear of the vehicle and brought the light pole crashing to the ground.

No injuries were reported resulting from either collision and no citations have been issued at this time.

Both vehicles were towed from the scene. TxDOT was on scene to assess the damage to the pole.

Officer Anderson was assisted at the scene by Officer Kenneth King.

July 26, 2017 - The driver of a vehicle involved in two crashes on the same day was arrested following the discovery of drug paraphernalia Friday, July 21, 2017.

Earlier in the day around 10:30am the Center Police Department (CPD) was contacted about a minor traffic incident from which the driver of a Lincoln Continental fled on Hurst Street. The driver of the second vehicle, a Ford King Ranch driven by Kenneth Campbell, followed the vehicle until CPD officers were able to make contact with the other driver at the intersection of Nacogdoches Street and Hurst Street.

Following an investigation of the incident, the driver of the Lincoln was issued a citation and everyone left the scene.

Later in the evening on the same day, CPD officers responded to a crash incident on Loop 500 to what turned out to be the same Lincoln from the crash earlier in the day. At 8pm a 2001 black Lincoln Continental driven by Brian Buesteton, 33, of Green Valley, Az. was eastbound on Loop 500 when the driver advised as he was approaching Few Ready-Mix Concrete Co. he heard a popping sound and lost control and hit the guardrail.

After colliding with the guardrail, the Lincoln came to a halt in the middle of the westbound traffic lane, facing south.

While performing an inventory of the vehicle CPD officers Steve Thornburgh and Brian Wright discovered drug paraphernalia in the Lincoln.

Buesteton was arrested at the scene and charged with possession of drug paraphernalia.

July 26, 2017 - The jury that has been summoned for Monday, August 7, 2017 for the 123rd Judicial District Court, Hon. Judge LeAnn Kay Rafferty presiding has been cancelled due to the scheduled cases being resolved or passed.

Anyone receiving a summons for that day is released from jury service until they receive a future summons.
