Virgil Wayne Duke, 82, of Center, Texas, passed away peacefully at his home on Friday morning, September 14, 2018.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, September 30, 2018, at Mt. Calvary on 417 East in Shelbyville, Texas.

He was a strong, tall, man’s man, who was blessed to not outlive his ability to care for himself and his family. He was proud and grateful for the time he had on earth and the quality of life he was able to experience right up to the moment the Lord called him home.

Virgil served his country in the US Navy aboard the USS Skagit (105) from 1954-1956.

For many years, Virgil worked and managed several well-known Houston establishments. He shot a pretty good game of pool, but never learned to play the piano. Later, he was a successful REPO man, even more successful after his wife, Ruth Ann, became his partner. She could hook the chains as fast as any man and they almost always got away before shots were fired. They knew Houston like the back of their hands and Virgil gave better directions and travel advice than MapQuest, especially on where NOT to go.

After retiring and returning home, Virgil was an active member and usher at Mt. Calvary and was loved and respected greatly by his church family and Pastor Don Windham and wife, Linda. He attended and supported all church functions with the exception of a very few that coincided with Astros games.

Virgil could be seen most any day under the pecan tree and was always ready for a game of dominos or 42. (He especially enjoyed beating James Earl, but would take on anyone willing to play.) Before losing his best friend, Michael Lee, they could be seen cruising 699 with radio on and windows down, both wearing their cool shades…They were both smooth talkers and impeccable dressers, always starched and pressed. And that’s only a couple of the many traits they shared. Michael would tell anyone that Virgil was the coolest sidekick he ever had…Losing his friend was hard on Virgil.

Friends and family enjoyed teasing Virgil about a variety of things including but not limited to the Astros, his age, his exes, and his pointed toed cowboy boots, but he could dish it out as well as take it with a smile. He was always knowledgeable of current events and seemed to know where everyone was and who was doing what…We finally figured out that he had become quite the proficient at “ghosting” on Ruth Ann’s Facebook! We love him and we always knew he loved us. The “Hill on 699” won’t be the same without him.

Graveside service for Verna Ann McWilliams, 83, of Alpharetta, Georgia formerly of Timpson, Texas will be held at 10 AM on Saturday, September 15, 2018 with Bro. William Dee Daniel officiating at Woodlawn Cemetery, Timpson, Texas. Ms. McWilliams passed away on September 7, 2018 in Roswell, Georgia. Born June 18, 1935, in Mishawaka, Indiana.

Verna Behnke was born and raised in Mishawaka, Indiana. She was the youngest of five children. At a very young age, Verna lost her father, Harry Behnke to cancer which left her and her siblings under the care of their beloved mother during a very difficult time. Facing this personal hardship, along with living through the Great Depression and World War II, Verna and her family marched through day by day making the best of what they were given. Verna’s mother taught them to face all challenges with complete faith in their Lord and Savior. She learned to seek Him first above all and to rely on His strength and provision.

Verna graduated from Mishawaka High School and continued her education at Butler University. The cooler norther temperature was too much for Verna so she decided to move to Arizona to live with one of her older brothers, Don. There she worked as a medical secretary. It was a divine plan that Verna come to Arizona. There she met the love of her life, Joseph McWilliams, Sr. The two were married and later moved back to Joseph’s home in Texas. Together they built a beautiful life that would bless them with two amazing children and take them around the world to places some only dream of seeing.

No matter where the family went, Verna used it as an opportunity to share the love and message of Christ’s saving grace. She made the world her mission field witnessing to homeless children on the streets in foreign countries, overcrowded orphanages and supporting missionary families across the globe. When Verna and her family settled back home in Houston, she continued her valiant work for Christ and guided her children to follow in her footsteps. They would volunteer together at their church food bank and would take advantage of any opportunity in the area to witness to others.

Verna was a living light that brought love, compassion, generosity and kindness to every single person she met. She impacted innumerable lives throughout her years as God’s servant on this earth and even in her battles with cancer and heart disease she continued to use those opportunities as a platform to proclaim God’s mercy and strength. She was the epitome of a Proverbs 31 woman, and she truly left the world around her a better place than when she entered this life. While Verna may have gone on to meet her precious Savior, the evidence of her walk with Christ still remains on the many lives she touched.

She is survived by her son, Joseph B. McWilliams and wife Andrea; daughter, Jennifer McWilliams Burrus; brother, Everett Behnke; grandchildren, Austin, David, Shelby and Trevor Burrus, and John, Hannah, and Madison McWilliams.

Verna is preceded in death by her loving husband, Joseph B. McWilliams; parents, Harry Behnke and Florence Alice McAuthur Behnke; brothers, Roy Behnke, Don Behnke; and sister Emily.

Joe Parrish Bush, 91, of Shelbyville, Texas, passed away on September 7, 2018 in Nacogdoches surrounded by his wife Selma, daughter, granddaughter and great granddaughter when he went peacefully into the arms of our loving Lord Jesus. He was born on May 12, 1927, in Tenaha, Texas to Euell Bush and Willie “Lout” Bush. Funeral services will be at 2 PM on Tuesday, September 11, 2018 at Mangum Funeral Home with Bro. Larry Trekell officiating. Interment will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Park.

A visitation will be held from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Monday, September 10, 2018 at Mangum Funeral Home.

Joe was born in Tenaha, Texas, May 12, 1927 and was raised in Hurstown until his death September 7, 2018.

The Lord had blessed Joe abundantly. He was able to work his entire 91 years of life. He worked for the U.S. Forest Service for over 30 years and after retirement he just could not bear the thought of being idle. He then went to work for the City of Center and then the County doing road maintenance.

After retiring from those 2 jobs, he then decided to drive his son's gravel truck until he was in his early 80's.

Joe was a wonderful provider for his family. He worried so much about their well-being and never thought about himself. He worried himself sick at times about his wife which always called "Mother." One of his last words to his daughter was to take good care of "Mother." That's just how he was about his family.

On the side, Joe loved to work in his shop and help his neighbors and friends with their lawn mowers or tractors. He loved people and every chance he got he wanted to reminisce old times. He cherished all his friends and he never met a stranger. He was always "striking up" a conversation with someone everywhere he went, even though he was hard of hearing.

After his son, Stevie, passed away in 2014 his health began to decline. He grieved over his loss until the day he passed away himself. Family and friends tried so hard to comfort him but he never was able to overcome the grief he felt.

Joe's passion was being outside, mowing grass. He loved to keep his place and his son's place looking immaculate. Although, his health had declined so much, he still pushed himself to do the impossible and keep both places mowed. His wonderful neighbors and friends had offered so many times to mow for him but he just wouldn't give it up. A couple days before he went to be with Jesus he was wanting to
get on his old tractor and mow that grass!

Joe had a tender heart when it came to animals. He made his family promise to take care of his cat, Miracle, that he rescued from a tree when she was just a kitten. He bottle fed her for weeks just to save her life. Stray dogs and cats would always appear at his house and he would faithfully take care of them. That's the kind of heart he had. Animals never went hungry or mistreated around Joe.

Now he doesn't have to worry about his family, the grass, animals or anything else on this earth. He is with the Lord and surrounded by Angels. For the family it’s a very sad time but not a goodbye....I'll see you later!

Joe is survived by his loving wife, Selma; daughter, Cheryl Kaul and husband Ralf of San Marcus, Texas; brother in law, Charles Killen of McClelland, Texas; grandchildren, Brandi Smith of Xenia, Ohio, Brittany Smith of Jasper. Texas; great grandchildren, Alexxis Allender of Xenia, Ohio, Halle Adams of Jasper, Texas; nephew, Freeman Hancock and Emily of Jasper, Texas; special friends, Larry Trekell and Johnnie of San Augustine, Texas, Michael Neal of Neuville, Texas, Paul Taylor and wife Cathy of Hurstown, Texas, and Doug Curtis of Patroon, Texas.
