The Timpson Lady Bears reached the championship finals round of the 10th Annual Tenaha Holiday Hoops Invitational Basketball Tournament where they were defeated by Martin’s Mill Lady Mustangs by a 44-34 score.

Martins Mill built a 10-6 lead by the end of the first quarter and they had a 30-17 lead by the midway break. The Timpson Lady Bears defense pitched a shutout however in the third stanza and the Lady Bears scored the only seven points of the third quarter. Timpson trailed only 24-30 going into the final frame.

The Lady Mustangs were able to outpace the Bears 14-10 to take the 44-34 win.

Martins Mill was led by Mollie Daniel with 14 points, teammate Taylor Sparks chipped in 10.

Timpson was led by Brylee Behrens with 11, Laiton Braddock added 9 points to the THS scoring tally. Behrens and Braddock were also recognized as all tournament honorees.

The Shelbyville Lady Dragon’s Girls, and Joaquin Ram’s Boys, varsity basketball teams competed in the 2018 Tenaha Holiday Hoops Consolation Bracket Championships on Saturday morning.

Shelbyville faced the Lipan Lady Indians but fell by a 58-38 final score. The game started out close and a Madison Moudy 2 pointer at the buzzer which ended the first quarter gave Lipan a narrow 7-6 advantage. Two scores each from Lady Dragons Brooke Elliot and Tykevia Blount helped Shelbyville take a 13-11 lead, by the midway point of the second period. Five points near the end of the period by sophomore forward Maggie Peacock gave Lipan the advantage they needed to take a narrow 21-16 lead into the locker room at the midway break.

Lipan went on a 12-0 scoring run which Lady Dragon Tykevia Blount ended with a bucket which cut the LHS lead to32-18 with less than four minutes left in the third stanza. The Lady Indians eventually took a 44-26 advantage into the fourth period.

The Lady Dragons fought back to cut the Lady Indian lead down to as little as 12 points at one point in the final quarter but Lipan eventually extended their lead to the 58-38 final score.

Lipan’s leading score was Madison Moudy who posted a game-high 19 points. Her teammate Taylor Clark chipped in 15.

Shelbyville was led by Brooke Elliott with 10 points, Kiana Bennett 7, Tykevia Blount 6, Jasmine Osby 4, Taniya Barnes 3, Faith Ridgeway 2, Kenzie Murry 2, Alicia Gaitlin 1.

The Joaquin Rams boys varsity consolation game with the Kemp Yellojackets followed the Lady Dragons game. Kemp was able to take the consolation trophy by defeating Joaquin 59-33.

Eleven points by Joaquin’s Eleazor Huerta helped the Rams gain a 17-13 lead by the conclusion of the first period. Joaquin was still within striking distance at halftime and but trailed 29-23.

Huerta hit a jumper at the 3:20 minute mark of the third quarter which would see Kemp still leading 37-30. From this point of the contest Joaquin went on a scoring drought that saw the Yellowjacket on a 22-0 scoring run which was ended by a Connor Bragg bucket with only 1:47 left in the game. Kemp outscored Joaquin 15-3 in the final period to help take the 59-33 win.

Boomer Irvin led Kemp with 20 points. Joaquin was led by Eli Huerta with 15, Conner Bragg added 8, Nick Matthews 6, Trenton Ramsey 4, Danny Huerta added 3 points to the Ram’s tally.

The Tenaha Tigers varsity basketball team has moved on to the semifinal round on the 2018 Tenaha Holiday Hoops Invitational Basketball Tournament by winning a hard fought contest , by a 54-39 score, over the Thorndale Bulldogs.

The Tigers led throughout the contest and they held an 11-3 advantage at the end of the opening period. By halftime Tenaha had grew their lead to 12 points and led 25-13.

Thorndale’s Sam Reeves, who had a game-high 21 points, got hot in the third stanza and he helped the Bulldogs cut the THS lead to just six points. The Tigers led 36-30 going into the final quarter of play.

Frequent substitutions during the early stages helped the Tigers keep fresh players flowing into the contest in the final minutes and the Tigers utilized buckets from six different players in the final period to build their lead to 15 points by game’s end.

JaQualin Franks led the Tigers with 15 points, Jeremy Patton added 13, Hayden Jenkins 11, Trindon Claiborne 10, Erik Smith and Juarmez Brock each scored 2 points. Tenaha will face Lipan High School at Tenahas’ SEC tonight  at 8 p.m.

Tenaha Tiger Gymnasium, Friday, December 28, 2018 –

The Tenaha Lady Tigers varsity basketball team bounced back from a tough loss last Thursday to win a Round 2 game against the Beckville Lady Bearcats by a 45-22 score.

Tenaha jumped out to an 11-0 lead by the midway point of the first quarter and led 11-3 by the end of the first period.

The Lady Tigers outscored the Lady Bearcat 13-6 in the second quarter and led 24-9 at the halftime break.

Beckville held closer to Tenaha in the third stanza as the Lady Tigers only outpaced them 9-8. The THS lead only grew by a single point and the teams went into the fourth period with Tenaha carrying a 33-17 advantage.

Scores for Tenaha in the final quarter by Hunter Collins, Addy Duncan, Kamari Gray and Jonica Glaze helped the Lady Tigers outpace the Lady Bearcats 12-5 in the final period, helping them earn the 45-22 win.

The Lady Tigers have no time to celebrate, as what is often the case in Holiday Hoops Consolation Bracket tournament play, the Tenaha team move on to play another round at Panola Community College in Carthage at 11:30 a.m. today, Friday, December 28, 2018 against the winner of the Lipan/ Sabine game.

Tenaha’s Special Events Center, Thursday, December 27, 2018 –

The Tenaha Tigers varsity boy’s basketball team took an 81-47 win over the Dime Box Longhorns during the Tenth Annual Tenaha Holiday Hoops Tournament.

The game was close in the early going. The Tiger’s JaQualin Franks hit an early 3-pointer to begin scoring for the day but the Longhorn’s Elijah Gamble answered soon after and the teams went back and forward in a close first until Dime Box grew their lead to 18-11 before Franks hit a Tiger 3-pointer at the buzzer which ended the first quarter. The Longhorns led 18-14 going into the second quarter.

Twenty second quarter points by Franks, who had a game-high 36 for the day, gave Tenaha a 41-29 lead at the halftime intermission. The Tigers extended their lead to 63-39 by the end of the third period. Tenaha outscored Dime Box 18-8 in the final quarter to post the 81-47 win.

Franks led the Tigers with 36 points. Hayden Jenkins 15, Trindon Claiborne 12, Jay Lloyd 8, Eric Smith 4, Tray Tutt, KeMyson Gray and Juarmez Brock each scored two points.

Dime Box had two players in double figures, Ray Gilbert had 13 points and Elijah Gamble added 12 points to the Longhorns tally. The Tigers will next play Thorndale game at 11:00 a.m. in Tenaha’s SEC on Friday, December 28, 2018.

Local schools along with a total of 42 teams have been spotted in action during Tenaha’s 2018 Holiday Hoops Basketball Tournament.

The Timpson Lady Bears left no doubt when they handed the Kountze Lady Lionettes their first loss during a convincing 56-13 opening round win at Timpson Bears Gymnasium Thursday morning. The Lady Lions didn’t break into double figures scoring-wise until there was less than one minute remaining in the game.

Early buckets and a free throw by Brylee Behrens helped the Lady Bears jump out to an early 7-0 lead by the last minute of the first quarter. Timpson held a 9-2 advantage going into the second period of play, by halftime Timpson led 24-5.

Timpson outpaced Kountze 16-2 in the third stanza and held a 40-7 lead going into the final period of play. Things didn’t get too much better for the Lady Lionettes as the Lady Bears outscored them 16-6 in the final quarter and took away the opening round win by a 56-13 margin.

Leading the Lady Lionettes was Haley Hafford with 4 points. The Lady Bears were led by Laiton Braddock with 14 points. Teammate Brylee Behrens had 12, Harlie Ware 10, Sara Duke 10, Jaycee Campbell 5, McKenzie Burgay 2, Claire Johnson 2, and JaKaria Deckard scored one point.

Later in the day, the Shelbyville Dragons varsity boys were spotted playing the Oakwood Panthers at the Tenaha Tiger Gymnasium. The Dragons led the Panthers 14-11 at the conclusion of the first quarter and expanded their lead to 37-27 by halftime. The third period concluded with Shelbyville ahead 56-42. The Dragons eventually took a 62-48 win over the Panthers.

Joaquin Rams Gymnasium, Thursday, December 27, 2018 –

This year marks the Tenth Annual edition Of Tenahas’ Holiday Hoops Basketball Tournament. It is recognized as the state’s premier small classification invitational basketball tournament. Seventy-five games over three days in five great venues will take place. The venues for this event are the Tenaha Special Events Center at and Tiger Gym, Panola’s Johnson Gymnasium, Carthage; Timpson High School Gym, and Joaquin High School Gym. The Joaquin Rams boy’s varsity team kicked off local Shelby County action with a hard fought contest at Rams’ Gymnasium with the Sabine Cardinals. The game was close throughout the entire contest.

Eylan Goodwin gave Sabine an early 2-0 advantage with the first bucket of the game but Eleazar Huerta answered back with a 3-pointer for the Rams to give Joaquin a 3-2 lead with 6:10 left in the first quarter. A David Robinson 3-pointer regained a lead for the Cardinals at 5-3 but Lorenzo Lane answered with a Rams bucket which tied the game 5-5 with five minutes left in the opening period. Sabine outscored Joaquin 9 points to 2 in the remaining portion of the first period and the Cardinals took a 14-7 lead into the second quarter.

AJ Gresham hit a 2-point bucket early in the second stanza but Joaquin’s defense stiffened and held the Cards scoreless for the remainder of the first half. Huerta, Conner Bragg and Nick Matthews teamed up to scored eight points for the Rams and they cut the Cardinal’s lead to 16-15 by the halftime intermission.

The scoring floodgates opened up for both teams in the third frame and Sabine took a 36-33 by the end of the third quarter.

Four 3-point shots by the Cardinals during the fourth quarter proved to be enough to help them gain a four point advantage and to win by a 49-43 margin.

Two players from each team scored in double figures. Sabine’s Eylan Goodwin made 16 points, teammate David Robinson scored 13. Joaquin’s Eleazar Huerta led the Rams with 23 points, Nick Matthews added 13 points to the Rams’ tally.

December 21, 2018, Timpson High School Gymnasium –

The Tenaha Tigers Varsity boys and girls basketball programs traveled to neighboring Timpson High School for District 22 Class 2A showdowns with the Bears and Lady Bears.

The Lady Bears won their game over the Tigers by a narrow 33-32 margin to move their conference mark to 4-0. They stand at 17-1 overall. Tenaha has a 2-2 district mark and they are 2-4 overall.

The Tenaha varsity boy’s team defeated the Bears by a convincing 61-30 margin to move to 2-0 in conference action. This was Timpson’s first district loss and they stand at 1-1. They are 4-6 overall.

The girl’s varsity game started slow and the Lady Bears trailed Tenaha 6-3 at the end of the first quarter. Timpson outscored Tenaha 6-4 in the second period and trailed the Lady Tigers only 9-10 at the halftime intermission.

Tenaha grew their lead to 21-17 by the end of the third stanza after going on a 7-2 scoring run early in the third period.

Timpson outscored the Lady Tigers 15-9 in the final period to earn the win.

Laiton Braddock led the Lady Bears with 11 points teammate Brylee Behrens was also in double figures with 10.

In boy's varsity action Tenaha  took a 7-0 lead early in the first period and never looked back. They led 19-4 at the end of the first period. At halftime the Tigers led the Bears 37-13. Tenaha outscored Timpson 18-8 in the third frame and took a 55-21 lead into the final period. The Bears defense stiffened and held Tenaha to six points in the final quarter and the Timpson offense was able to score nine points to cut the Tiger’s final lead to 61-30.

The Timpson Bears will participate in the Latexo Tournament on December 27, 2018. Tipoff is at 1:20 p.m.

The Tenaha boys, and Tenaha and Timpson girl’s varsity teams, will participate in the Tenaha Holiday Hoops Invitational Tournament on December 27-29. Info on game times is available on the Tenaha ISD website.
