March 22, 2017 - The Texas Association of Basketball Coaches (TABC) has awarded Hiram Harrison the Outstanding Coach Award.

TABC recipients are nominated by Texas high school basketball coaches and voted on by regional coordinators and committees and Harrison was selected for Class 4A Region II.

Coach Harrison lead the Roughriders through a great season which ended in the Regional Semifinals round of playoffs with a 8-0 district record and 32-5 season.

Under his leadership, 12th grader Octaxious Evans was selected as TABC Boys All State Class 4A. He also had two players, Octaxious Evans and 11th grader JaTerious Evans selected as TABC 2016-17 Boys All-Region Selections.

Being awarded Outstanding Coach for Class 4A Region II also made Harrison one of four finalists for the overall Don Coleman Award which is one nominee from each of the four UIL regions. Although the award did not go to Coach Harrison, it is still a great honor to be in the finalist list. The award is named after Don Coleman, Hall of Fame coach and former TABC president from Memorial High School in Spring Branch ISD (Houston).

Roughriders Ballpark - Tuesday, March 21, 2017 – The Center Roughriders Varsity baseball team gained their first lead in the bottom of the sixth inning, and held on to take a 5-4 win over the visiting Garrison Bulldogs.

Garrison Bulldogs pitcher Chris Edwards struck out five Roughrider batters, during the first three innings,  which helped GHS set Center High School down in 1-2-3 order, and lead 1-0 after a score by Bulldog Logan Stoddard.

Garrison gained another score and led 2-0 in the top of the fourth inning, due to a wild pitch getting behind Center’s catcher.

The Roughriders bounced back and tied the game in the bottom of the fourth frame at 2-2 with scores from Clay Snider, and Dalton Alexander, who started off the inning with a leadoff double.

Sean Slowikowski and Chris Edwards scored in the top of the fifth inning, giving Garrison a 4-2 advantage.

‘Rider Tyler Fountain doubled of the left field wall to start the bottom of the fifth inning and he later scored on a passed ball to bring Center to within 3-4 of the Bulldogs. Christian Lee scored for Center on an error later in the inning and tied the game at 4-4, after he had reached base by drawing a walk.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Jaxon Covington led off the inning with a single and was later driven in with an RBI single by Tyler Fountain. The Roughriders were able to later shut down the Bulldogs by setting them down 1-2-3, in the bottom of the seventh frame on two ground balls and a pop-up.

Center is now 8-8 overall and they are 1-2 in District 16 Class 4A competition. Garrison is 5-6 for the season and they have a 1-2 District 22 Class 3A record.

The Roughriders will host the Rusk Eagles this Friday, March 24 at 7 p.m. in a district game.

March 20, 2017 - Joaquin Lady Ram powerlifter Desere Cooper competed at the State Contest in Waco, Texas March 17-18 and won 1st place in the 181 weight class division. Cooper won the State Champion title with a total lift of 940 which included 390 squat, 175 bench press, and 375 dead lift.

Coopers total lift of 940 broke the state record of 910 set in 2015. She also received 3 honors including Outstanding Lifter and Outstanding Squat.

Congratulations on winning the Texas High School Women's Powerlifting Association Class 1A-2A State Champion title!

March 20, 2017 - The Lady Dragon Powerlifting team competed at State on March 17-18 in Waco, Texas and placed 3rd overall!

Katie Casey won the gold and is the State Champion in the 259 weight class.

Additional lifters placing were: 3rd Place - Kennedey Parker, 4th Place - Hannah Hall, and 5th Place - Breanna Jackson

Team members competing were Caitlyn Campbell, Hannah Hall, Steff Moore, Jaiden Rose, Breanna Jackson, Kennedy Parker, and Katie Casey. The team is coached by Coach Michael B. Taylor. Congratulations Ladies!

March 16, 2017 - Sneaky Cleats 04-Pride, a 12U fastpitch select team based out of Canton, TX brought home the gold this past weekend, March 12-13, in their first spring tournament held at the Luck of the Irish FASA tournament at Lear Park in Longview, TX.

They went 7-1 in bracket play coming out on top against a very tough Turn Two team out of Houston, winning 4-2.

Congratulations team on the win! The girls had taken four months off and opened the season with a bang on a cold opening weekend bringing home the 'ring bling'!

Tuesday, March 14, 2017 – The Tenaha Tigers suffered a 23-0 loss to the Woden Eagles varsity baseball team at Tenahas’ Cole DePriest Ballpark.

Woden did not allow a Tigers hit but THS reached base twice on walks to avoid allowing the Eagles a perfect game during the, five-inning, run-rule shortened game. The Eagles had 10 hits and 14 walks during the game.

The Tigers were set down in 1-2-3 order in the first, fourth, and fifth innings. Tenaha got a late start due to a long run in UIL Basketball playoff action and are 0-2 overall, as well as 0-2 in District 23-2A Baseball competition. Woden is 8-1 overall and 2-0 in conference action.

The Tigers trailed merely 0-3 going in to the third inning but gave up nine runs during the top of the third inning, after walking four, and giving up four hits, to Woden batters.

The Tigers will regroup and get ready to host the Martinsville Pirates Friday, March 17 at 4:30 p.m. The Pirates last lost to the Joaquin Rams by a 28-3 margin.

March 10, 2017 - Students from Self Defense America went to Houston Texas for an AAU competition on Saturday, March 4, 2017. Competing and placing were (from left) Zachary Payne (3rd place) in Traditional Forms; Rex Payne (5th place) in Traditional Forms; Abby Cooper (1st place) in Weapons and (1st place) in Traditional Forms; Logan Galindo (2nd place) in Weapons and (2nd place) in Traditional Forms; and Hollie Hamilton (2nd place) in Traditional Forms. We are lucky to have this great group of youth representing Shelby County.

March 7, 2017 - Desere Cooper qualifed for the State Powerlifting Meet to be held on Saturday, March 18th in Waco, Texas.  At the Regional Meet her lifts totaled 910 pounds, placing her first in the region.  Congratulations Desere and Good Luck!
