VFW USS Maine Sinking Observance

February 10, 2026 - The Spanish-American War lasted a little less than four months, April 21 – August 13, 1898, and ended Spain’s worldwide empire.  It ended with America easily defeating Spain and signaled the United States' emergence as a world power.  The blowing up of the battleship USS Maine in Havana harbor on February 15, 1898, with the loss of 266 crewmen and marines, in essence, was the start of the war.

VFW Loyalty Day Observance May 1

April 30, 2024 - Loyalty Day originally began as "Americanization Day" in 1921 as a counter to the Communists’ May 1st celebration of the Russian Revolution. On May 1st, 1930, 10,000 VFW members staged a rally at New York’s Union Square to promote patriotism. May 1st then evolved into Loyalty Day and the first official observance of the day was in 1959 after the signing of Public Law 85-529 on July 18, 1958.
