Desert Storm Observance Rescheduled

February 25, 2016 - The observance for those who served in Operation Desert Storm that was scheduled for tomorrow, Friday, February 26th at 10:00 am has been rescheduled for Monday, February 29th at 10:00 am.  It will still be held at the Veterans Memorial on the grounds of the Historic Courthouse.  

This change due to funeral of post life member Billy Kent on Friday.

Flags Half Staff Presidential Proclamation to Honor Scalia

February 15, 2016 - The President has ordered flags at half-staff in honor of Associate Justice of the US, Antonin Scalia from now until sunset on the day of interment.

If you have other flags flying with the US Flag they too should be lowered as no flag should ever be higher that the US Flag. Flags that cannot be lowered can have a black ribbon or cord tied to the top of the staff to show respect.

VFW to Observe Remembrance of USS Maine Sinking

February 11, 2016 - The Spanish-American War lasted a little less than four months, April 21st – August 13th, 1898 and ended Spain’s worldwide empire.  It ended with America easily defeating Spain and signaled the United States emergence as a world power.  The blowing up of the battleship USS Maine in Havana harbor on February 15th, 1898 with the loss of 266 crewmen and marines in essence was the start of the war.

Vietnam Peace Accord of 1973 Observance

January 26, 2016 - The Paris Peace Accord ending the Vietnam War was signed on January 27, 1973, and was followed by the withdrawal of the remaining American troops. The terms of the accords called for a complete ceasefire in South Vietnam, allowed North Vietnamese forces to retain the territory they had captured, release of US prisoners of war, and called for both sides to find a political solution to the conflict.

Humane Group of Shelby County Meeting

December 12, 2015 - There will be a meeting tonight, December 10 at 6:30 at the Pizzeria to discuss and plan for the fundraiser for the Humane Group of Shelby County. This group currently helps with the feeding, neutering/spaying and rescue of abandoned animals in Shelby County. Everyone is invited to attend. Presidential Proclamation Orders Flags at Half-Staff

December 3, 2015 - The President of the United States has issued a proclamation ordering the flag of the United States to be displayed at half-staff until sunset on Monday, December 7, 2015 to honor the victims of the attack in San Bernardino.

All other flags flying with the US Flag should also be lowered. Those that cannot be lowered can have a black ribbon or cord tied to the top to show respect.

VFW to Observe Pearl Harbor Day

December 1, 2015 - It began when Japanese aircraft appeared in the air over Pearl Harbor, Hawaii just before 8:00 a.m. on Sunday morning, December 7th, 1941. When the attack ceased shortly before 10:00 a.m., less than two hours after it began, American forces had paid a fearful price. Eighteen (18) ships were either damaged or sunk, 180 aircraft were destroyed and 2,403 were dead and thousands of others wounded.
