In the 1700’s, Francis Hopkinson was a judge, author, musician, composer, member of the Continental Congress, and a signer of the Declaration of Independence. And on June 14, 1777, his design was accepted for the flag of the United States. And you always thought it was Betsy Ross who did that!

Last week, here in the paradise that we call “Deep East Texas,” we reached triple digits for the first time this year. And next week it’s predicted to be above 100 every day, with heat indexes of 110+. Yikes! I think we may be in for a long hot summer.

I had the pleasure of coordinating the music for our Vacation Bible School this past week. Music has always been a big part of the VBS experience. There was music in the Opening Rally each morning and Music Camp each afternoon, and a Music Class for each age group.

We’ve come to the last day of our Vacation Bible School at First Baptist Center. God has blessed with lots of fun and lots of music and crafts and teaching. A focus of the Bible Study classes this week has been the man called David. He was a shepherd, a warrior, a general, a statesman, a diplomat, a musician, a poet . . . a King.

They called it “The Monkees”. The four actors (mediocre musicians, at best) became instant celebrities and their show climbed to the top of the ratings.

Today is Day Three of our Vacation Bible School - we're halfway through! - and God continues to bless. Great numbers, great leaders, great kids. We serve a great God!

Tomorrow morning our pastor will be sharing the plan of salvation with several groups of children. Please lift this up in prayer! Statistics tell us that almost half of all Christians make their decision for Christ before the age of twelve. Perhaps that’s your testimony.

Today is opening day for Vacation Bible School at my church. It’s going to be busy! It’s going to be blessed! And of all the VBS activities, perhaps the one that’s the biggest blessing... is scripture memorization. I have no doubt that some of the verses that are firmly implanted in my brain were ones that I learned, as a child, at Vacation Bible School.

In Beijing, China, since April of that year, students had been gathering in Tiananmen Square, to protest the oppressive Chinese government. They marched for free speech. They demonstrated for democracy. They worked for change.

Yesterday, children from all over America met in Washington D.C. for the National Spelling Bee. That’s been happening every year since 1925. This year the winner received a trophy and 50,000 dollars!
