Museum Hosting Open House for New Exhibit 'Quilts - A Stitch in Time' (Today)

February 23, 2023 - The Shelby County Museum will host an open house Thursday, February 23, 2023 from 1pm until 4pm to kick off an exciting new exhibit, 'Quilts - A Stitch in Time.' 

Don't miss the opportunity to view a quilt that came to Texas in a covered wagon along with newer quilts. 'A Stitch in Time' is a visual journey of the evolution of quilting from a necessity to a display of artistry.

Come and join in the celebration of Shelby County's rich history.

Shelby County Museum Seeking Historical Photos, Paintings of Shelby County

May 21, 2022 - The Shelby County Museum needs your help! The next exhibit at the museum will feature the history of Shelby County via photos or paintings. We need you to share your photos of buildings, old homes/homeplaces, or people from Shelby County. The loan of your original photographs would be greatly appreciated but we do have the ability to make copies of your family photos. We need the photographs by the 10th of June.

Annual Sample/Metcalf Family Reunion; Citizens of the Republic of Texas Ceremony

June 26, 2017 - Saturday, July 1, 2017 will be the annual Sample/Metcalf Family reunion held at the Sample Cemetery. At this year's reunion the William Carroll Crawford Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas will be assisting with a very special medallion ceremony marking the graves of John Sample (790-1847) and James Bedford Sample (1825-1910) as Citizens of the Republic of Texas. The ceremony will begin at 10:30am. 

Shelby County Historical Society/Museum March Meeting

March 7, 2017 - The March meeting for the Shelby County Historical Society/Museum will be held Tuesday, March 21, 2017 at 2pm in the Museum on 230 Pecan Street.  The guest speaker will be Mr. Bill O'Neal, who is the Texas State Historian and a well-known author.

He taught history for many years at Panola College and will share a brief history on the Alamo.  He has written many books about the history of Texas.  Everyone is invited to attend the meeting.
