Texas General Land Office and Great Springs Project Celebrate Establishment of Texas Bicentennial Trail

September 19, 2025 - Today, Texas Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham, M.D., the Texas General Land Office (GLO) and Great Springs Project are pleased to announce the signing of HB 4230, establishing the Texas Bicentennial Trail to promote Texas’ rich historical and cultural heritage, provide for increased outdoor recreation, and enhance economic development in the state.

Land Commissioner Announces Completion of Accessibility Improvements on South Padre Island

August 30, 2025 — On August 28, Texas Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham, M.D., announced that the City of South Padre completed construction, funded in part by the Texas General Land Office's (GLO) Coastal Management Program (CMP), to improve accessibility at Neptune Circle, Beach Access #16 located on Gulf Boulevard between East Saturn Lane and East Venus Lane. The improved beach access point is once again open to the public.

Land Commissioner Buckingham Announces Completion of the Restoring Colonial Waterbird Populations Project

August 27, 2025 - Today, Texas Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham, M.D., announced that the Texas General Land Office's (GLO) Coastal Management Program (CMP), in partnership with the Coastal Bend Bays and Estuaries Program (CBBEP), completed the Restoring Colonial Waterbird Populations project to enhance 180+ rookery islands across eight bay systems ranging from the mid to lower Texas coast. 

Land Commissioner Kicks Off 29th Annual Treasures of Texas Coast Children’s Art Contest

January 7, 2025 - Today, Texas Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham, M.D., is thrilled to kick off the 29th Annual Treasures of the Texas Coast Children's Art Contest supported by the Texas General Land Office’s (GLO) Adopt-A-Beach Program. All public, private, and homeschooled Texas kindergarten through sixth-grade students are invited to participate in the contest. Students' artwork should illustrate why the Texas coast is important or special to each student. 

Commissioner Buckingham Encourages Texans to Utilizes GLO's Texas Beach Watch Program

May 21, 2024 - Today, Texas Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham, M.D., invites Texans to utilize the Texas General Land Office's (GLO) Texas Beach Watch resources during the 2024 Beach Season. As Texans and people from across the country head to the Texas coast for summer vacation, the GLO's Texas Beach Watch program provides weekly updates on beach water quality.

Commissioner Buckingham Announces 28th Annual Treasures of the Texas Coast Children’s Art Contest

February 21, 2024 - Today, Commissioner Dawn Buckingham M.D. announced that the GLO is currently accepting admissions for the 28th Annual Treasures of the Texas Coast Children’s Art Contest. This contest is facilitated through the Texas General Land Office’s (GLO) Adopt-A-Beach Program.

Funding for Bolivar Peninsula Beach and Dune Restoration Project

December 13, 2023 - Today, Texas Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham, M.D. announced the approval of Coastal Erosion Planning & Response Act (CEPRA) funding for the Bolivar Peninsula Beach and Dune Restoration project. The Bolivar Peninsula Special Utility District, Bolivar Peninsula Chamber of Commerce, Galveston County Road Administrator Lee Crowder, Galveston County Judge Mark Henry, and Galveston County Precinct 2 Commissioner Joe Giusti played pivotal roles in securing this funding.
