Solicitation Process Coming Soon for Ecosystem Services Projects

July 24, 2023 — Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) will soon begin seeking proposals from public or private entities to construct nature-based carbon sequestration infrastructure or other projects that will harness other similar ecosystem services on TPWD properties.

House Bill (HB) 4018, passed in the 88th Texas Legislative Session and effective September 1, allows TPWD to enter into agreements through an innovative conservation model providing both wetland protection and carbon credit-based revenue to the agency.

Weevils Make Positive Impacts in Giant Salvinia Management

June 26, 2023 – Giant salvinia is a destructive, invasive, free-floating aquatic fern that poses a major threat to Texas lakes. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) implements an integrated pest management strategy to control giant salvinia and other aquatic invasive vegetation. Biological controls, like giant salvinia weevils, are one of the tools in the management effort, and biologists are encouraged by some recent discoveries.

Property Sale Prompts Fairfield Lake State Park Closure

June 5, 2023 — Fairfield Lake State Park will close to the public beginning 10 p.m. June 4.

“Texas Parks and Wildlife Commissioners continue to pursue options for saving Fairfield Lake State Park, including through condemnation,” said Commission Chairman Arch “Beaver” Aplin III. “But in the meantime, department staff must focus on decommissioning the property before our lease ends June 13.”

June 2, 2023 — Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission announced Friday it will hold a special meeting at 10:30am June 10 to consider acquiring through condemnation a 5,000-acre property in Freestone County that includes Fairfield Lake and Fairfield Lake State Park.

May 25, 2023 — During Thursday’s public meeting, Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission unanimously voted to authorize Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s (TPWD) executive director to take all necessary steps to purchase approximately 5,000 acres in Freestone County including Fairfield Lake State Park.
