Texas, 42 States Reach $19.5 Million Settlement with Bristol-Myers Squibb Company

December 8, 2016 - AUSTIN – Attorney General Ken Paxton today announced that the state of Texas will receive $1,015,420 in a $19.5 million settlement that 42 other state attorneys general reached with the pharmaceutical company Bristol-Myers Squibb (BMS). The settlement stems from claims that the company violated the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices Act by improperly marketing the antipsychotic drug Abilify. Under the terms of the settlement, BMS is prohibited from making false or misleading claims about Abilify, including its safety or efficacy in comparison with other drugs.

AG Paxton Issues Warning on Decorative Contact Lenses for Halloween

October 26, 2016 - AUSTIN – Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton today cautioned consumers about the dangers of wearing decorative contact lenses for Halloween costuming or cosmetic reasons. The decorative lenses, also marketed as “costume,” “fashion” or “colored” lenses, pose potential serious risks to eye health, including infections and loss of vision.

Before buying decorative lenses, the attorney general’s Consumer Protection Division (CPD) recommends the following precautions:

AG Paxton Calls Attention to Domestic Violence on #PurpleThursday

October 20, 2016 - Texas Attorney General Paxton and OAG employees across the state will raise awareness of domestic violence by participating in #PurpleThursday on October 20th, as part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM). On that day, all employees are encouraged to wear purple to work, raising awareness of the issue, showing support for survivors, and taking a stand against domestic violence.

AG Paxton Settles Suit with App Company Collecting Children’s Information

October 3, 2016 AUSTIN - Attorney General Ken Paxton announced a settlement with California app developer Juxta Labs, Inc. for violating the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices-Consumer Protection Act. Juxta Labs signed an Assurance of Voluntary Compliance (AVC), approved by the Travis Country District Court, agreeing not to collect personal information from any child under the age of 13. The AVC prohibits the company from allowing children to use their apps if those apps are not compliant with the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act.

AG Paxton Obtains $13.2 Million in Relief for Texans in Multistate Settlement with Retailer Who Victimized Military Members,Vets

September 30, 2016 AUSTIN – Attorney General Ken Paxton today announced that Texas, 48 other states and the District of Columbia reached a settlement with USA Discounters to resolve the states’ claims of deceptive trade practices against the company. In its marketing, USA Discounters promised to provide credit to all military members, veterans and government employees for purchases of consumer goods from the retailer.

Attorney General Ken Paxton Sends Guidance Letter to Texas Schools

August 25, 2016 - AUSTIN – On May 13, 2016, the U.S. Department of Education and U.S. Department of Justice issued a guidance letter that told schools across the country that, as a condition of receiving federal funds, they were now required under Title IX to allow students to use intimate facilities corresponding to the gender with which they identify.

Federal Court Rejects Request to Block Enforcement of Campus Carry Law

August 23, 2016 – The United States District Court for the Western District of Texas today agreed with Attorney General Ken Paxton and denied a request by three University of Texas professors to block enforcement of Texas’ new campus carry law. The Court concluded that the professors were unlikely to prevail in their lawsuit and thus were not entitled to a preliminary injunction against enforcement of the law.

Ruling in Favor of School, State Rights, Federal Court Stops Enforcement of Obama Public Schools Bathroom Directive Nationwide

August 22, 2016 - AUSTIN – Late yesterday, U.S. District Judge Reed O’Connor’s issued a nationwide injunction prohibiting the Obama administration from enforcing its bathroom directives against public schools across the country.  Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton represents a 13-state coalition in the federal court lawsuit in the Northern District of Texas challenging the Obama administration’s unlawful federal directive that schools allow students to use whatever bathrooms and other intimate facilities they prefer.
