Ruling in Favor of School, State Rights, Federal Court Stops Enforcement of Obama Public Schools Bathroom Directive Nationwide

August 22, 2016 - AUSTIN – Late yesterday, U.S. District Judge Reed O’Connor’s issued a nationwide injunction prohibiting the Obama administration from enforcing its bathroom directives against public schools across the country.  Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton represents a 13-state coalition in the federal court lawsuit in the Northern District of Texas challenging the Obama administration’s unlawful federal directive that schools allow students to use whatever bathrooms and other intimate facilities they prefer.

Court of Appeals Rules in Favor of Texas’s Sovereign Power: Hazlewood Act is Constitutional

June 23, 2016 AUSTIN — The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit today upheld Texas’s Hazlewood Act, which waives public state university tuition for honorably discharged veterans who enlisted from Texas. To qualify for the 150 hours of tuition-free credit, veterans must have entered military service at a location in Texas, been a resident of Texas while enlisting, or declared the state as their home of record on their military records. April 23, 2016 – Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton this eveining released the following statement regarding the verdict reached in Bernie Tiede’s second sentencing trial, which was prosecuted by the Attorney General’s Office:

Spanish-Speaking Consumers Should Be Aware of Scammers

March 21, 2016 - AUSTIN – Attorney General Ken Paxton today issued a warning to Spanish-speaking consumers, alerting them to scam artists posing as debt collectors calling on behalf of government entities. In recent cases, a caller claims to represent the Texas Supreme Court and demands payment of outstanding debts supposedly incurred by consumers sometime in the past. 

Supreme Court Denies Apple’s Request to Review E-books Price-Fixing Case

Apple to pay millions for its role in scheme to inflate E-book prices

March 8, 2016 AUSTIN — Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton today announced the U.S. Supreme Court denied Apple Inc.’s request for the Court to review a lower court decision, clearing the way for the distribution of $400 million to U.S. consumers who paid artificially-inflated prices for e-books. The lower court held Apple liable for conspiring with five major publishers to raise the prices of electronic books.

January 25, 2016 AUSTIN – Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton recently held a press conference to announce a new unit within the Texas Attorney General’s Office dedicated to combating human trafficking. This new unit will be headed by Deputy Criminal Chief Kirsta Leeburg Melton, an experienced prosecutor with an extensive background in combating human trafficking in Texas.
