Guidelines for Placing Political Signage

September 24, 2018 – As mid-term elections draw near, candidates and their supporters are once again posting signs of support. The Texas Department of Transportation would like to remind candidates that election law dictates where campaign signs can be placed along Texas roadways.

“We are beginning to see a lot of signs along the right of ways prior to the November election and we want everyone to be aware that we are required to remove signage of any kind when it is placed on the right of way,” said Rhonda Oaks, public information officer for the Lufkin District.

Johnson-Garrett Family Reunion

September 20, 2018 - A gathering of the family of Andrew and Caroline Johnson (both deceased) completed its 57th annual Family Reunion on the weekend of June 15-17, 2018 in San Augustine  and Center, Texas. This family consists of the descendants of Andrew’s son and daughter: Frank Johnson and Fannie Garrett (both deceased). 

CACTX Announces FY 2019 Board Officers, New Board Members

September 19, 2018 - The Children’s Advocacy Centers of Texas, Inc. (CACTX) is excited to begin FY 2019 with a new slate of board executive officers. James Kimbell (Houston- Clark Hill Strasburger) will serve as the incoming CACTX President, joined by President-Elect Gina DeBottis Metts (Houston- Retired, Special Prosecution Unit), Vice President Revlynn Lawson (Austin- Linebarger Goggan Blair & Sampson, LLP), Secretary Billy Millwee (Dripping Springs- Sellers Dorsey), and Treasurer Blaine Brunson (Austin- Morgan Stanley).

DPS Ramping Up Move Over/Slow Down Enforcement

September 19, 2018 Lufkin – The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) is conducting enforcement efforts across the state focusing specifically on violations of the state’s Move Over/Slow Down law. These periodic enforcement operations by DPS Troopers are planned throughout the year at various locations in Texas, with several operations planned in August. Operations will take place in the Houston, Bryan, Rosenberg, Conroe, Liberty, Cleveland, Huntsville, Beaumont, Matagorda, Columbus, Lufkin, and Jasper areas throughout the day on Wednesday, September 19.

TEA Accepting Applications for Grow Your Own: Teachers Grants

September 17, 2018 Austin – Commissioner of Education Mike Morath today announced that applications for the 2019–2021 Grow Your Own: Teachers, Cycle 2 grant program are now being accepted.

Local educational agencies including school districts and open-enrollment charter schools, as well as education service centers, educator preparation programs and institutions of higher education are eligible for the grant program, which aims to elevate the teaching profession in Texas by developing high-quality education and training courses at the high school level.
