FDA Alerts Consumers About Potentially Life-Threatening Health Problems Linked to Limbrel

December 5, 2017 - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has recommended that Primus Pharmaceuticals, Scottsdale, Arizona, voluntarily recall Limbrel, a capsule marketed to “manage the metabolic processes associated with osteoarthritis.” The company has not yet acted to remove the product from the market. Although the product is marketed as a medical food, the preliminary determination of the FDA investigation is that Limbrel is an unapproved new drug. The agency does not have mandatory recall authority over drug products.

Rymal Remembers WWII POW Survivor, Stepfather

December 4, 2017 - Larry Rymal of Joaquin sent Shelby County Today the below information in memory of his stepfather who passed away 20 years ago yesterday.

On April 13, 1918, my stepfather, Dr. Roy Lee Emken was born. He passed away on December 3rd, 1997. He was a prisoner of war with the Japanese during the war’s duration.

From words written in his diary:

"...From war’s alarms, from deadly pestilence,
Be Thy strong arm our ever sure defense;
Thy true religion in our hearts increase,
Thy bounteous goodness nourish us in peace...."

DRT Christmas Luncheon

December 4, 2017 - The William Carroll Crawford Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas will hold their annual Christmas luncheon and meeting on Saturday, December 9, at 12:00 at the Sam Samford Lodge in Center. The Gateway to Texas Chapter of the Sons of the Republic of Texas will once again join in the festivities. The DRT and the SRT will furnish a turkey and a ham and DRT officers will bring drinks and ice, bread and paper goods. DRT chapter members, bring your favorite salad, veggie or dessert. Spouses and guests are encouraged to share the day.

DSHS Issues Alert as Flea-borne Typhus Activity in Texas Increases

December 1, 2017 - An increase this year in the number of cases of flea-borne typhus across multiple areas of the state is prompting the Texas Department of State Health Services to remind people to take precautions to prevent contracting the disease. A health alert issued today asks providers to consider a diagnosis of flea-borne typhus for people with fever and at least one other symptom of the disease. Typhus cases normally peak in Texas between May and July and again in December and January.
