June 1, 2016 - The Sabine and Angelina Ranger District is seeking candidates to fill vacancies on its Title II Resource Advisory Committee (RAC) created under the Secure Rural Schools Act.
The committee is responsible for the development and recommendation of projects that will benefit National Forest land in Shelby and Sabine counties, as well as monitor the projects and provide advice to the Forest Service.
June 1, 2016 - May has been an extremely busy month at the museum. We had visitors from Vista Academy of Jasper, 3rd graders from Deweyville and Hemphill, and we had students from Burkeville.
Mr. James Dean will return in the middle of June to complete the installation of the simulator. It will be a one-of-a kind simulator and we are very grateful to Mr. Dean for his donation to our museum.
June 1, 2016 - General Mills is collaborating with health officials to investigate an ongoing, multistate outbreak of E. coli O121 that may be potentially linked to Gold Medal flour, Wondra flour, and Signature Kitchens flour (sold in Safeway, Albertsons, Jewel, Shaws, Vons, United, Randalls, and Acme). June 1, 2016 - The Texas Department of State Health Services has confirmed the first locally acquired case of chikungunya, a mosquito borne illness. A Cameron County resident got sick with the illness in November 2015 and was diagnosed with a lab test in January 2016. The case, however, was not reported to the local health department until last month.
April 11, 2016 - This year the Shelby Soil & Water Conservation District will be awarding a $1,000 scholar-ship. The scholarship recipient will receive $500 for the fall 2016 semester and another $500 for the spring 2017 semester. The Shelby SWCD Scholarship is open to college students who are working toward a degree in the natural resources or agricultural field. May 31, 2016 LUFKIN – The Texas Transportation Commission approved funding for improvements for AL Mangham Jr. Regional Airport at its May meeting in Austin last week.
Funds totaling $58,750 were approved and earmarked for improvements which include engineering and design for fencing improvements at the airport. A project consultant is expected to begin work this summer.
Costs for the project will be funded by the TxDOT’s Aviation Facilities Grant Program and the City of Nacogdoches. The grant program preserves and improves the state’s general aviation system.
May 31, 2016 - The Texas Transportation Commission last week approved 60 maintenance and construction projects across the state totaling $186.3 million, with five located in the Lufkin District that total $8 million.
Angelina, Nacogdoches, Polk, San Jacinto and Trinity counties were approved for construction projects that will rehabilitate roadways, replace and repair bridge and approaches, upgrade culverts and resurface existing pavement. Specific projects included:
