TxDOT Project Updates for Week of June 8-12


June 7, 2015 - LUFKIN – TxDOT projects each summer include seal coating pavement surfaces and motorists are beginning to see work crews perform this annual task that is an important part of TxDOT’s preventative maintenance program.

A seal coat is an application of a layer of asphalt binder covered with a layer of aggregate applied to an existing surface. The yearly application cost $180 million statewide and helps maintain the 186,600 lane miles of roadway.

Shelby County Residents, Other Texans Joins NC to DC Walk to Demand Health Care Action

June 4, 2015 - Six Texans, including two from Shelby County, are joining supporters from 10 other states on a walk from North Carolina to Washington, DC to call for action to protect access to rural health care. The Walk, organized by conservative GOP Mayor Adam O’Neal of Belhaven, NC and civil rights leader Bob Zellner, aims to highlight the plight of rural hospitals and the need for Texas and other states to accept Medicaid expansion funding from the federal government.

ETMC Files Suit For Exculsion From PPO

June 2, 2015  - East Texas Medical Center Tyler has filed suit[1] in excess of $1 million against three of the largest health insurance carriers[1] in East Texas, citing that the hospital’s exclusion from the preferred provider networks (PPO) of these companies has created serious and negative consumer impacts.

The insurance companies named in the suit are Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Texas, a division of Health Care Service Corporation; Aetna Health, Inc., Aetna Life Insurance Company; Cigna Healthcare of Texas, Inc.; and Cigna Health and Life Insurance Company.

Nichols Passes Legislation to Dedicate Billions to Texas Roads

June 1, 2016 - The Texas Legislature has approved Senator Robert Nichols' (R-Jacksonville) Senate Joint Resolution 5, which will constitutionally dedicate approximately $3 billion per year to the State Highway Fund (SHF). As this is a constitutional amendment, it will be sent to the voters in November 2015.

"I am thankful to Governor Abbott, Lt. Governor Patrick and my colleagues in the Legislature for their support," said Nichols. "If passed by the voters, this legislation will be the largest single increase in transportation funding in Texas history."
