Shelby County Offices Closed

November 10, 2023 - Shelby County Offices are closed on Friday, November 10, 2023, in observance of Veteran’s Day.

Offices are expected to return to normal business hours on Monday, November 13, 2023.

November Constitutional Amendments, City of Center Election Results (All Boxes In)

November 7, 2023 - Voting results for the 2023 November Constitutional Amendments election and the City of Center Mayor election are in with all boxes counted. In the City of Center election, incumbent David Chadwick retains his position as Mayor. In the Constitutional Amendments, the majority of Shelby County voted to approve all of the amendments except for Proposition 13 - "The constitutional amendment to increase the mandatory age of retirement for state justices and judges." The final vote was 'against' on Proposition 13.

Tenaha ISD Voters Approve VATRE in Special Election

November 7, 2023 - In the Tenaha Independent School District special election for Voter Approval Tax Ratification Election (VATRE) the vast majority of voters were in favor. City of Center Ballot Information, Notice of Election (Election Day Today)

November 3, 2023 - City of Center, Shelby County, Texas will have an election on November 7, 2023 for the position of Mayor.

Early voting and election day voting is at the Center Community House, 423 San Augustine Street, Center, Texas 75935. Early voting starts October 23 with hours of operation being Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. with extended hours on Thursday, November 2, through Friday, November 3, 7:00 a.m. 7:00 p.m. Early voting ends November 3.

DPS Investigates Crash on CR 1211

November 6, 2023 - Emergency personnel were dispatched to a single-vehicle crash on CR 1211 just south of where it transitions in FM 1645.

Sheriff Reports Arrest of Permenter, Stone on Narcotics Charges

November 6, 2023 - Sheriff Kevin W. Windham reports the arrest of Deneisa Permenter, 50, of Center and Mark Stone, 50, of Center.

U.S. Highway 96 Near Country Club Scene of Two-vehicle Crash

November 6, 2023 - U.S. Highway 96 North near the Center Country Club was the scene of a two-vehicle crash November 1, 2023.

Emergency personnel were dispatched to the scene of the crash and when they arrived, one vehicle was on its top in the middle of the southbound side of the roadway.

Joaquin VFD Report Includes 3 Calls for Week of Oct. 29 - Nov. 4

November 6, 2023 - Over the week of October 29th to November 4th the Joaquin Volunteer Fire Department had 3 calls. Here’s a summary of the week’s events.

Monday night at 9:36pm a call came in for smoke in an apartment after the resident turned on their furnace. The resident reported that there was no active fire but was concerned that a fire might break out and requested that the JVFD check out the furnace. Members of the JVFD responded and found that some components of the heater had burned up causing the smoke, but there was no further danger of a fire starting.

Bee Spill Causes Sticky Situation on U.S. Highway 96 (Updated)

November 4, 2023 - US Highway 96 North just near County Road 4350 outside of Center is currently shut down November 1, 2023 at just after 10pm due to a crash involving a load of bees.
