May 4th City, School District Elections (This Saturday)

Election Day This Saturday

April 22, 2024 - There are three cities and three school districts in the county that will be having an election on Saturday, May 4, 2024.

Early voting will be from Monday, April 22 through Friday, April 26, as well as Monday, April 29 and Tuesday, April 30. If you have any questions, please call the appropriate entity.

Sheriff's Department Investigates Death on U.S. 59

May 2, 2024 - The Shelby County Sheriff’s Department has confirmed an investigation into the death of a man on U.S. Highway 59 (U.S. 59) near Tenaha on Sunday, April 28, 2024, and has provided a summary of their findings.

Texas Department of Public Safety State Troopers were dispatched to the location on U.S. 59 between Tenaha and the Panola County line for a welfare check in reference to a person laying on the side of the road sometime before 9pm. 

Recommendation for Screening for Breast Cancer Changed to Biennial for Ages 40-74

May 2, 2024 - The Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA) published on April 30, 2024 a US Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommendation statement regarding Screening for Breast Cancer.

With moderate certainty, the article’s recommendation is biennial screening mammography for women aged 40 to 74 years. Also, the conclusion was that the current evidence is insufficient to assess the balance of benefits and harms of screening mammography in women 75 years or older.

Flooding Impacts Shelby County Roads (Update: 10:08am)

May 2, 2024 - Shelby County Today has received reports as of 8:50am, May 2, 2024, that North Circle in Center has some standing water due to flooding. 

There is also reported water across the roadway at U.S. Highway 59 at the railroad overpass in Tenaha.

9:41am - Constable Roy Cheatwood reports water across U.S. Highway 84 at Joaquin apartments, and also at the Joaquin High school.

10:08am - Water is reported over the roadway on State Highway 87 between Timpson and Center at Penson Creek.

NWS Special Weather Statement

May 2, 2024 - Strong thunderstorms will impact southwestern De Soto parish, southern Panola, southeastern Rusk, eastern Nacogdoches, Shelby, southeastern Angelina, San Augustine and western Sabine counties through 8:45am CDT.

At 7:45am CDT, Doppler radar was tracking a cluster of strong thunderstorms along a line extending from 7 miles west of Timpson to near Melrose to 10 miles southeast of Huntington. Movement was east at 35 mph.

Hazard: Wind gusts up to 50 mph and pea size hail.
