July 23, 2018 - Sunday was the 16th Sunday in Ordinary Time. Most of the talk before Sunday School was about the hot weather. All of East Texas is under a heat advisory warning, and I am thankful for a cool house to take refuge in. We had a nice crowd by Paxton standards this morning. Our Sunday School lesson was titled “Entering God’s Kingdom.” The background scripture was Luke 13: 22-30, where Jesus tries to explain who will be saved. Jesus speaks of a narrow gate through which many will not be able to enter. I found this scripture difficult but thought-provoking. Fannie kept us on message, and we had good discussions. Joe shared with us seven verses that give him an understanding of salvation.

The Gospel Lesson for the 16th Sunday in Ordinary Time was split. The first part was Mark 6: 30-34 and then it skipped to verses 53-56. In between this Gospel Lesson are two wonderful stories—the feeding of the multitude and Jesus walking on water. Both of these stories are sermons unto themselves. But by focusing on the two parts of today’s lesson, we see how Jesus understands the need for rest. In Genesis, after each day of creation, God proclaims that what he created is good. It is only when God creates the Sabbath that he calls it holy. Our need for rest and silence, focusing our energies on the spiritual, is a vital part of a living faith.

Before the church service began, a car pulled in and we thought we might have a visitor. No one came in, so Sue went to see if the person needed something. It turned out she was driving to Florida and had suddenly became very tired; she stopped to remove her contacts, close her eyes, and rest. That was really a good illustration for the sermon and our need for rest.

It is hard to believe that we are heading into the final weeks of July. This summer is flying by: Before we know it, kids, teachers, and school staff will be getting ready for school. I sure hope the temperature moderates some before school starts.

Last week was our program at Holiday Nursing Home. Hilda played piano for most of the singing, but Stellar accompanied herself on guitar. After she finished, a Holiday client—the brother of our newest volunteer Sallie—said he wanted to play guitar on the next song. What a special gift! Heather, their activity director, also joined us; she had remembered her grandfather’s signature song, so Nora led that a capella. Nora also sang a hymn and “sang a book,” John Denver’s story about his grandmother’s feather bed. Sue read some funny poems chosen by kids and emceed the program. Pastor Matt started and ended the program with his unique slant on God’s message.

This week our ministry at Lakeside Assisted Living Thursday begins at 2:00. All this month we will be collecting cans of spaghetti and ravioli for Community Christian Services; in August we expand “Undie Sunday” to the whole month, collecting children’s socks and underwear.

“I sought the Lord, and he answered me and delivered me from all my troubles.” (Psalm 34:4)

July 17, 2018 - All men are born with sin in their hearts due to the sin of Adam. All men long for more than they have, no matter their worldly status. Even the richest among us if he doesn’t know the Lord longs for something more, something he just cannot find, but that his heart burns for.

For some, as for me, their fortunes turn to the Lord and he delivers them from their troubles into the light of the Lord Jesus Christ. For those fortunate few their lives will never be the same again for they are lifted from the pit of destruction, set aside for the pleasure of the Lord God.

Oh, how can I tell you of the joy and peace to be found in the arms of our Lord? How can I tell you of the feeling of blessings as the love of Christ washes over the redeemed?

“I will bless the Lord at all times; his praise shall continually be in my mouth.” (Psalm 34:1)

Yes, that is the only way I can tell you is if I continually praise the Lord God for his good blessings of salvation.

Maybe if I ask this question it might give those who have not yet met the Lord food for thought; I ask you to answer this without hesitation; “Where will you be 200 years from now?”

If, you cannot instantly tell me that you will be in heaven, resting in the arms of our Savior then you need to call out to the Lord, asking him to save you today.

“This poor man cried, and the Lord heard him and saved him out of all his troubles.” (Psalm 34:6)

“The young lions suffer want and hunger, but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing.” (Psalm 34:10)

All one must do to be saved is cry out in earnest to the Lord for forgiveness for sin, for the Lord hears every cry for salvation, every plea for redemption and he answers all who call upon him for salvation.

Those who accept the Lord Jesus as Lord and Master will never lack of any good thing again.

Oh, he is not going to grant worldly wishes, no, he grants our needs, not our wishes. Our blessings come in heaven where we will dwell forever in the house of the Lord. Our time on earth is nothing but a time of exile from the blessings to come. A time for work for the Lord reaching out to others that they too might come to know and fear the Lord.

Listen to the Psalmist as he teaches us the fear of the Lord.

“Keep your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking deceit.” (Psalm 34:13)

“Turn away from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it.” (Psalm 34:14)

While the saved must try to convict the unsaved that they too might find the the Lord, the saved cannot dwell with the unsaved. The saved must visit but then turn away from evil and seek the lord or, risk being drawn back into the domain of the devil.

“The face of the Lord is against those who do evil, to cut off the memory of them from the earth.” (Psalm 34:16)

The saved must show the unsaved, by their daily lives, the joy and peace to be had in the Lord.

“The Lord redeems the life of his servants; none of those who take refuge in him will be condemned.” (Psalm 34:22)

Seek his face and receive his blessings this day and know the joy and peace of the Lord.

July 16, 2018 - Sunday was the 15th Sunday in Ordinary Time. The topic of conversation this morning was the electrical outage around Tenaha and the really hot dry weather. Being without air conditioning for just a short while is no fun, and five or six hours makes for an uncomfortable day. Fannie handed off the baton to Joe, and he taught our Sunday school lesson. He did a fine job. The lesson was the parable about the widow and the unjust judge. The scripture was Luke 18: 1-8. The judge was not only unjust: In Jesus’ parable he did not fear God or have respect for his fellow human beings. The widow was determined to get justice from this dishonest man; her relentless demands forced the judge to give her what was fair. Jesus is telling his listeners that God will provide justice for his people without the prodding needed for the judge.

We had a small crowd this morning, which isn’t unusual for Paxton Methodist. The Epistle Lesson for this Sunday was Ephesians 1: 3-14, filled with some of the most awe-inspiring language found in the New Testament. These twelve verses are classified as a eulogy—but not one for a funeral. The word “eulogy” is from the Greek, meaning “a blessing from God.” The writer of Ephesians says we are the focus of God’s love. We are part of his family. That is something to feel really good about. The word “Gospel” means good news, and that’s what this passage gives us.  Joe and Hilda teamed up to bring us our music this morning, with traditional songs we know and enjoy singing.

Hilda said they had a good program at Focused Care and that Minnie, Nora, Fannie, and Pastor Matt joined her. I was under the weather that Tuesday. Next month we plan to start our program at 10:00 instead of 10:15. This month we will collect cans of spaghetti and ravioli for Community Christian Services.  Sue gave a report about the goods we have donated and really bragged on how well all the CCS volunteers have things running. This Tuesday our ministry will be at Holiday Nursing Center at 2:00.
