August 10, 2023 - Paul wrote to the churches of Galatia and said, “And let us not be weary in well dong, for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not” (Galatians 6:9)

Within all of us is a natural desire to be successful and we want to do it quickly. It is painful when repeated effort does not bring the results we desire. However, our impatience betrays a lack of faith in God. The farmer has more faith when he plants his see, trusting God will send rain and give the crop.

The tragedy is that even Christians who set their hope in God are sometimes the victims of impatience. When we are unable to convert the world, our city or even our closest neighbors, some want the Lord ot come and bring the world to an end. The Christians in Thessalonica believed the day of the Lord was just at hand. So they gave up their daily work and went about as pious busybodies. Paul wrote in II Thessalonians 3:11, “For we hear that there are some which walk among you disorderly, working not at all but are busybodies.” Discipline was needed and Paul applied it. He would writ, “Now them that are such we command and exhort by our Lord Jesus Christ that with quietness they work and eat their own bread. But ye, brethren, be not weary in well doing.”

There are times when we will be weary. Let’s make sure our weariness comes as a result of working for the Lord and not from being a busybody.

August 7, 2023 - While hitch-hiking home from seminary in 1955, a kind motorist gave me a ride from Springfield, Mo. to Mena, Arkansas. I was hungry and looked forward to a meal at Mother’s when I got home. As I “thumbed” for another ride, an elderly man approached me from a nearby house.

Smiling and patting me on the back, he said, “Son, the Lord has sent this to you,” and he handed me a silver dollar. After thanking him… and the Lord… I ordered a 35 cent hot dog at a nearby café.

I’ve often wondered about that elderly man. How could he have possibly known I was broke? But I don’t guess he really had to know…

…as long as God did.

August 7, 2023 - Good Morning! It's Monday, August 7.

Last night, my church celebrated The Lord's Supper. At the end of the service, we sang a song. Here's the story behind that song.

In 1755, John Fawcett, 16 years old, was converted under the preaching of the famous evangelist George Whitefield. God called him to preach not long after and, at the age of 21, he became pastor of a small, working class church in rural England. A few years later this gifted minister was offered a position at a large church in London - a huge step forward in his ministry career.

Fawcett shared this news with his little congregation and, after preaching his final sermon, they helped him load his few possessions onto a cart waiting in front of the church. Suddenly his wife burst into tears, exclaiming that she just could not bring herself to leave. Her husband quickly agreed and the church family rejoiced as they unloaded the cart. John Fawcett had many more opportunities to leave that church - but he never did. He died, as pastor, after 54 years of service. A legacy of love and faithfulness.

This story has a special resonance for me. My father became pastor of a small, working class church in Houston, shortly after graduating from seminary. A gifted preacher, he had many opportunities to go to larger, more prestigious churches - but he never did. He died, as pastor, after 54 years of service. A legacy of love and faithfulness.

John Fawcett wrote these words...

Blest be the tie that binds our hearts in Christian love

The fellowship of kindred minds is like to that above.

Meet you back here tomorrow,
Bro. David

"And now you must repent and turn back to God so that your sins will be removed, and so that times of refreshing will stream from the Lord’s presence.   And he will send you Jesus, the Messiah, the chosen one for you" Acts 3:19-20

August 3, 2023 - The Hebrew writer quotes a passage from Jeremiah chapter 31 in Hebrews 6:10. He writes, “I will put my laws into their mind and write them in their hearts.” God is telling us there will come a day when his  law will not be written on tablets of stone, but will be a law written in the heart.

God is talking about the spirit of His laws taking hold of our hearts. In the Old Testament, we often see people keeping the law of God without the law of God taking hold of their hearts. Jesus quotes Isaiah in Matthew 15:8 when he says, “This people honoreth me with their lips but their heart is far from me?

Is there a parallel or application for our day and time?  Why do we obey God’s commandments? Do we live God’s kind of life out of a fear of going to hell?  Do we live God’s kind of life because that is “what we are supposed to do”? Or, are we living God’s kind of life out of our love for God? Are we living God’s kind of life because of the love God showed for us in sending Jesus and we want to return that love?

Where is God’s law written for us today? Is God’s law written on our heart so that we live for God because we love Him? It should be.

It’s something to think about. . . TBP
