June 27, 2016 - “Listen to me and eat what is good....” Isaiah 55:2
After serving two years in the Army during the Korean War, I re-enrolled in East Texas Baptist University and became student Pastor of The Bonaldo Baptist Church near Nacogdoches, Texas. The church membership was made up of a large of Hispanics who lived along the Angelina River. I drove to the church every Saturday and spent the night at a church member’s house.
The Areolas let me sleep on their best feather mattress when I stayed with them one weekend. The mattress was home-made….was soft and comfortable….. but was too warm to sleep on a hot August night. The Areolas (like many families back then) had no fans or air conditioning in their homes. So just past midnight, I walked out to the moon-lit barnyard and stayed long enough to cool off.
The next morning Brother Vick hollered out, “Preacher, come eat breakfast…and dinner is already cooked for when we get home from church.” When we got home from church, Mrs. Arreola set a big pot on the table. “It’s squirrel dumplings,” Vick laughed…I had to settle for an old fox squirrel…I don't know what’s happened to our little cat squirrels”. The few red hairs floating on top of the dumplings proved that Vick’s kill was indeed a fox squirrel…and the great taste proved what a truly great cook his wife was.
To the surprise of many, squirrels are still one of the most popular game animals in the eastern United States. A national survey reveals that there are over 1.8 million hunters of squirrels in our country….and if the U.S. should fall on hard times, there could be millions more of us in the woods hunting them again. We might wind up with pots of squirrel dumplings on our tables again…..
….with no scruples about what kind of squirrels they were.
June 23, 2016 - First Baptist Church of Center is hosting a music camp, Not Your Average Joe: The Story of Joseph with a 50's Twist. Pre-K3 - 4th grade are welcome to attend. Music Camp will be held June 27th through July 1st from 9AM to 12PM. Musical Performance will be Friday at 6PM. Call 936-598-5605 for registration information.
June 23, 2016 - The dates for Vacation Bible School at Jackson Baptist Church are June 26 - 29, 2016.
There will be classes for Preschoolers - 6th grade. We will begin at 6 pm each evening and will dismiss at 8 pm.
Students will experience life on the farm—with animals, tractors, and growing crops. As they learn about God's faithfulness as revealed in the life of Joseph, they'll be encouraged to grow in godliness and to trust in God's plan.

June 22, 2016 - First United Methodist Church will be hosting Vacation Bible School June 26 - 29th from 6:00-8:00 p.m. each night. The church is located at 211 Porter Street Center, Texas. The children will come to see and interact with Bible characters in various places in a typical Bible Village setting. Everything will be located in the Fellowship Hall. June 21, 2016 - In a culture where people do not want to hurt the feelings of those who perform at a substandard level we have it where “Everybody Gets a Trophy.” Sadly this same reasoning has been brought into the religious world. But the sad, hard reality is that not everybody will go to heaven, or get a trophy. The Bible says:
“But for the fearful, and unbelieving, and abominable, and murderers, and fornicators, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, their part shall be in the lake that burneth with fire and brimstone; which is the second death” (Rev. 21:8).
“and there shall in no wise enter into it anything unclean, or he that maketh an abomination and a lie: but only they that are written in the Lamb's book of life” (Rev. 21:27)
“Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these: fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, 20 idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousies, wraths, factions, divisions, parties, 21 envyings, drunkenness, revellings, and such like; of which I forewarn you, even as I did forewarn you, that they who practise such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God” (Gal. 5:19-20).
“Or know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with men, 10 nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God” (1 Cor. 6:9-10).
As Paul said, “Let no man deceive you with empty words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the sons of disobedience” (Eph. 5:6). Everybody does not get a trophy.

June 20, 2016 - “Let the redeemed of the Lord say so..” Psalms 107:2
I was a college sophomore when I bought my first car. It was a black twelve-year old ‘41 Ford. Jones Chevrolet in Center, Texas stored it for me eight months while I paid for it. It cost me $495 and I couldn’t wait to drive it home.
I painted the dash tomato red and put a wheel cover and steering knob on it before driving it to ETBC to show it off. Parking it every day in front of the dining hall assured me that everyone saw it. I was proud of that car!!
When I was converted to the Lord, I was so proud of the Lord Jesus. I apologized to people I had offended, returned the fifty cents I’d stolen from Barney Bridges’ Café , and showed my new faith to everyone.
Many people don’t show off their cars like they used to. I’ve also noticed that many Christians don’t show the Lord off like they once did.
I wonder why.
June 20, 2016 - Sunday was the 5th Sunday after Pentecost. It is also the third Sunday in June so our nation celebrated Father’s Day. If you read Ephesians 6: 4 in The Message, it says “Fathers, don’t exasperate your children by coming down hard on them. Take them by the hand and lead them in the way of the Master.” The role of the Father has gone through many changes in the last few generations. Most women work outside the home, and the care of hearth and home is shared in most families. The most important and difficult job fathers have is raising the kids. It is a two-person job and more—actually, it does take a whole village to raise a child.
Our attendance was small for both Sunday school and church. We a visitor this morning, and when I got to church I walked right past the visitor without saying hello. Gene, though, noticed the friendly visiting snake coming up the ramp toward the front door. Ay yi yi!
The scripture for Sunday school came from Zephaniah. The prophet, like all the Old Testament prophets, saw hope and reconciliation with God and with each other. The entire Old Testament is about covenant making and covenant breaking.
Sue and I missed last Sunday. We had gone north for the Rinas family reunion in Chicago. We had a good time visiting with cousins and their children, grandchildren, and yes, great-grandchildren. My mother died this past February, and only two of the ten siblings are left. Both Ray and Aggie came, and it was great to see them.
On Sunday I decided to go out of the way to visit Villisca, Iowa. It is the town where my father grew up and my Smith grandparents are buried. However, I am very challenged when it comes to maps and directions. Going to Villisca took over six hours! We stayed in Shenandoah near Villisca, which is the home of the Everly Brothers. The next morning we headed south toward home.
This coming week we have two ministries. On Tuesday, June 21st we are going to Holiday Nursing Center, and on Thursday, June 23rd will be our ministry at Lakeside Assisted Living.
