January 3, 2017 - Late Tuesday night around 10:30pm fire crews from Huxley, Shelbyville and Joaquin were called out to a house fire on FM 3172 just past the FM 139 split in Huxley.

When fire crews arrived flames could already be seen coming out of the attic. Fire crews quickly started battling the fire to try keeping it off a detached garage that firemen said looked to have some sort of living area in the back.

Fire crews were also able to keep the fire off of a nearby barn. Getting water to the scene proved to be a larger task as the fire department tanker trucks were having to return to the Huxley firehouse to refill.

According to firemen on scene the occupants were able to make it out; however, the husband was taken by private vehicle to the hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation. The cause of the fire is unknown at the time.

An arctic cold front will move into the region Saturday, with the coldest air so far this winter season expected to spill south Saturday night and Sunday. High temperatures Sunday will likely occur during the morning, with temperatures expected to gradually fall during the day. In addition, there is the potential for light rain or drizzle to transition to light freezing rain, light freezing drizzle, or light snow late Saturday night across Southeast Oklahoma and Southwest Arkansas, before it possibly spreads south into extreme Northeast Texas and extreme Northern Louisiana north of Interstate 20 Sunday morning. Temperatures will fall below freezing across Southeast Oklahoma, extreme Northeast Texas, and Southwest Arkansas Sunday afternoon, and across the remainder of the region Sunday evening. Temperatures are expected to remain near or below freezing across Northeast Texas, Southeast Oklahoma, Southwest Arkansas, and portions of Northern Louisiana through Tuesday, and possibly Wednesday, with nighttime temperatures falling well into the upper teens to near 20 degrees areawide New Years morning, and well into the teens Tuesday and Wednesday mornings. In addition, winds Monday and Tuesday mornings will result in dangerously cold wind chill values falling into the single digits to lower teens over much of the region.

Precautions should be taken now to wrap any exposed pipes, and ensure that the elderly and those that may not have adequate indoor heating are kept warm. Consider bringing your pets inside. If you have to be outside in these very cold temperatures, be sure to dress in layers, wear gloves, and a hat. Extended exposure to these very cold temperatures will lead to frost bite and hypothermia.

December 29, 2017 Lufkin – With winter weather forecasts that includes possible freezing precipitation in East Texas for coming days, the Lufkin District is preparing to pre-treat major roadways, overpasses and bridges.

The pre-treatment is scheduled to include all nine counties of the Lufkin District as the winter weather approaches. The brine treatment that will be applied to overpasses, major structures and bridges will discourage ice or snow from sticking to pavement in the case of winter precipitation. The treatment will be applied in each county and crews will continue to respond to snow or ice conditions as needs arise and roads allow.

The Lufkin District will continue to monitor the National Weather Service for updates and potential winter weather conditions for East Texas. Safety of the traveling public is priority and crews will continue to work to prepare and respond to weather conditions.

Motorists are urged to stay alert and follow these guidelines in the case of freezing precipitation:

  • Use caution when driving over bridges and overpasses, which are the first to freeze.
  • Reduce speed and drive with caution. A vehicle needs at least three times more space to stop on a slick roadway. Do not apply brakes suddenly and avoid using cruise control to allow for better response time should you encounter slippery roads.
  • Slow down when approaching emergency or maintenance vehicles, especially when flashing lights are displayed. Visibility can be reduced during winter weather conditions.
  • Stay alert and prepare for travel delays.
  • Winterize vehicles.
  • Turn on low beam headlights when driving in rain, sleet or snow.
  • Check area weather conditions and drivetexas.org for current conditions and road closures.
  • For more information, contact Rhonda.Oaks@txdot.gov or (936) 633-4395.
