Tony Harland Barclay, 79, of Frisco, passed away Wednesday, January 16, 2019, in Frisco.

Visitation will be held from 12:00 noon to 2:00 p.m., Saturday, January 19, 2019, at Grace Avenue United Methodist Church in Frisco. Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, January 21, 2019, at Watson & Sons Chapel with Joyce Cravens officiating.  Interment will follow at Woods Post Office Cemetery in Panola County.

Tony was born February 19, 1939, in Tonkawa, Oklahoma, to Ernest J. Barclay and Alma L. Stone Barclay. He served in the US Navy, was a firefighter in Carlsbad, New Mexico, and worked in Saudi Arabia in the 60’s. Tony later joined Anixter Cable Company and worked there for 30 years before retiring. He loved Dallas Cowboy football and was one of their biggest fans. Tony was a member of Grace Avenue United Methodist Church in Frisco, where he was involved in the Providence Sunday School Class. He was also a lifetime member of B.P.O.E. Carlsbad #1558.

On Wednesday, January 9, 2019, William Edward Prentice, Jr., a loving husband and kind father of six children, passed away in Bangkok, Thailand.

Also known as “Bill” and “Dad” to his loved ones, William was born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana. He was a great man of many contraries. With a love for the earth and a nurturing for all that grows on it and in it, he graduated from LSU with a degree in International Agriculture. That passion took him to diverse places and a variety of jobs that included cultivating native fruit, building schools, teaching lepers to farm, cattle ranching, and more. He worked for a time with the Peace Corps and the National Council of Churches and later went into business on his own. These many ventures took him for a short time to Jamaica and across South America, particularly Ecuador, for nearly two decades.

With high regard for all people and a deep respect for plants and animals alike, William left an impact everywhere he went and on everyone whom he met. Comfortable speaking English and Spanish, he treated everyone as an equal regardless of background. He was calm and gentle in demeanor but also quite the talker. He could find a friend in anyone. But he was also so easy to talk to about anything. A hard worker, William believed in honesty and giving your best. He loved to get his hands dirty outside planting endless rows of fruit trees, muscadine vines, and vegetable plots and taking care of the fish, the dogs, the chickens, the guineas, the turkeys, the donkeys, the duck, the goat, and the mule. If he’d had it his way, he’d spend his days outside, perhaps riding in his buggy with Kassie, his beloved mule. But he was also perfectly content indoors drinking a good cup of coffee with chicory and reading whatever he could get his hands on.

Yes, while he was a farmer at heart, William was also an avid reader and known to many for his intellectual nature. Well-read and cultured, he was more likely to listen to NPR than music, but he could also turn around and recommend a musical or book of poetry to you. Because of the value he placed on learning, he moved his family from Ecuador back to his home country the U.S. in the hopes of ensuring a better education for his children.

After a few moves across the southern states, William established his life and family in Center, Texas. He started his work in the poultry industry, with stints for Green Acres and later Pilgrims. Later, he made the jump to the water well business with the opening of Pixie Water Wells, a business he started as a joint venture with his sons. Named in honor of his mother Celia, whose starting investment launched the company, Pixie became so associated with William that he was often even called “Mr. Pixie.” A good neighbor to all, William was well known in the Center community and believed in supporting local business and local people.

Above all, William had an insatiable appetite for truth, specifically Bible truth. Throughout his life, he read and investigated the Bible often, but the turning point in his life came when he became one of Jehovah’s Witnesses. The knowledge he acquired and his subsequent dedication to God brought on changes to the way he thought, spoke and acted and gave him the greatest joy and satisfaction in his life. Because of the sense of purpose it gave him and the powerful effect it had on him, William loved to share Bible truths with everyone. He believed in choosing to be happy and maintained a positive attitude throughout life. If there’s one thing we all remember of him, it’s his wonderful smile.

William was preceded in death by his father, William Edward Prentice, Sr. He is survived by his wife Ines, his six children, Daniel, Paul, Rebeca, William, Hannah, and Stephanie, his mother Celia, his brother David, six grandchildren, Elizabeth, Katherine, Melaina, Ruben, Celia, and Olive, several cousins, nieces and nephews, and a large, extended family in Ecuador.

A visitation will be held from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM on Friday, January 18, 2019 at Mangum Funeral Home.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, January 20, 2019, at the John D. Windham Civic Center in Center at 3 P.M. Flowers can be sent to Mangum Funeral Home.

Barbara Maxine Youngblood, 77, of Center, passed away Saturday, January 12, 2019, in Center.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Monday, January 14, 2019, at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center. Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, January 15, 2019, at Watson & Sons Chapel with Bro. Clifton Hughes officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Herman Cemetery in Center.

Mrs. Youngblood was born March 30, 1941, in Shelby County, to Alvin Johnson and Addie Gillis Johnson. Barbara was a loving, devoted, exceptional wife, mother and nanny. She and her husband, Jimmy, were married on November 10, 1961, and enjoyed 57 years together. Their union brought forth 2 children, 3 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren, with another due in July 2019.

Barbara spent her life taking care of her family and making absolutely sure everyone around her was comfortable and certainly well-fed. She and Jimmy loved camping and took Ronnie and Becky all over the United States on vacations. Her favorite place was the mountains of Colorado. She worked for many years at Center ISD and loved all the students and her coworkers. She and Sandy Hudspeth formed a special bond that would last forever.

Barbara’s family had game nights regularly, and her favorite game was UNO. However, nobody wanted to sit next to her because she became a woman possessed. Her favorite target was her daughter-in-law, Margaret.

Barbara leaves behind family and friends who love her dearly and will miss her tremendously. But, she is now smiling down on everyone as she walks with her Lord and Savior.

Billy Ray Magness, 82, of Timpson, Texas passed away Friday, January 11, 2019, in Center, Texas, surrounded by loved ones.  Born March 25, 1936, in Clute, Texas to the late William Horace and Ludie Mae (Bass) Magness. Visitation will be held Sunday January 13, 2019 from 3 – 5 PM at Taylor Funeral Home, 511 Ross Graves Dr., Timpson, Texas.

Funeral service will be held at 2 PM on Monday, January 14, 2019, at Timpson Missionary Baptist Church, with Bro. Charles Williams and Bro. Levi Cohorst officiating.  Interment will follow in Timpson Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery, Timpson, Texas.  

Billy graduated from Timpson High School in 1954 and received his Masters in Education from Stephen F. Austin State University. His life was devoted to the field of education where he took great pride in molding young minds and lives. He taught and coached at China ISD and Tenaha ISD before returning home to Timpson where he coached girls’ athletics and taught social studies. In 1978, Billy was led to become the principal for the Shelby County Cooperative Special Education Program and he remained there until his retirement in 1997.

Billy married the love of his life, Nora Ann and the two shared over 40 wonderful years together before her passing in 2002. He later married Mary, whom he knew in high school, and the two remained lovingly devoted to one another’s care until Billy passed. Billy enjoyed the outdoors when he was not working in education. He had a collection of stories that he was happy to share about all of his fishing and squirrel hunting adventures. Billy was a loyal member of Timpson Missionary Baptist Church for over 60 years. During his service there, he took on the responsibility of deacon and Sunday School teacher. Many memories and laughs will be treasured and missed by all that knew him.

Steven "Steve" Edward Hampton, 76, of Center, Texas, passed away on January 10, 2019 in Nacogdoches, Texas. He was born on September 7, 1942 in Henderson, Texas to C.B. Hampton and Mable Inez Owens Hampton. Funeral services will be at 2:00 PM on Sunday, January 13, 2019 at Mangum Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Park. 

A visitation will be held from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM on Saturday, January 12, 2019 at Mangum Funeral Home Chapel. 

Steve graduated from Sam Houston High School in Houston, Texas and shortly after started building and inspecting radio and microwave towers. He moved back to Shelby County in 1967 where he received a position building cooling towers. While there, he met Ann Parker and the two were married on March 1, 1969. Steve had a desire to take a new route professionally and began driving trucks cross-country for Melton Truck Lines. In 1970, he transferred to Vernon Sawyer Truck Lines in Bastrop, Louisiana and four years later, in 1974 became the owner and operator. He successfully built his business into a strong and long-lasting company that he loved for 22 years. In 1996, Steve made the decision to uproot from his life-long career and move to Dallas to try his hand at something new. He went to work for R-COM Construction Company installing underground copper and fiber optic cables. He remained there until his retirement in 2011 when he moved back to Center.

Martha Ann Manasco, 71, of Timpson, passed away on Sunday, January 6, 2019, in Timpson, Texas. Born July 10, 1947, in Paxton Community, Shelby County, Texas to the late Andrew Ollis Sholar and Ethel Lee (Lewis) Munn.   Memorial service will be held at 1:00pm on Wednesday, January 9, 2019 at Stanley Church of Christ, Stanley, Louisiana.  

Martha was raised in Joaquin, Texas. She attended Joaquin High School and completed her GED. She met and married the love of her life, Roy Hershal, and the two spent over 45 years together before his passing. Her favorite past times are those spent serving the lord and spending time with her family. She enjoyed drinking coffee each day and watching Fox News. Martha spent time reading and enjoyed playing cards. She was a member of Stanley Church of Christ and loved her church and Lord dearly.

Thomas Daniel Franks of Nacogdoches, Texas was born January 29, 1932 in Stockman, Shelby County, Texas, and died December 31, 2018 in Tyler, Texas.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years Dorothy Smith Franks; son and daughter-in-law Carl and Ginger Franks of Woden; daughter and son-in-law Luanna and Jerry Adams of Houston; son and daughter-in-law Scott and Carolyn Franks of Hudson; daughter and son-in-law Rhonda and Jay Richardson of Nacogdoches; sister Lurlene Franks Boyett of Stockman, Texas; brother and sister-in-law Truman and Cathie Franks of Selma; grandchildren Jamie and Shawn Askey of Lufkin, Randy and Kaylee Franks of Dubai, Whitney and James Frazier of Nacogdoches, Meredith and Jerry Fehlker of Spring, Seth and Kalyn Franks of Lufkin, Anna and Hollis Smith of Rosenberg, and Jessica, Jenna, and Katelyn Richardson of Nacogdoches; great-grandchildren Kayne and Klaire Askey, Jolee Grace Conner, Jack Fehlker, and Addilyn Franks; and numerous beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his son Thomas Daniel Franks, Jr. and his parents Bernard D. and Anna Belle Ramsey Franks.

Thomas Daniel Franks graduated from Timpson High School in 1948 and from Stephen F. Austin State College in 1951. He began his lifelong career in education with the Brazosport ISD where he was an elementary teacher and assistant principal from 1951-56. After earning a masters’ degree in Education from the University of Houston in 1956, he taught at Westminster College and Bible Institute in Tehuacana, Texas from 1956-58. He pursued a Doctor of Education degree from Indiana University at Bloomington during 1958-61, while also teaching at Fairview Elementary in Bloomington from 1959-1961. Following a teaching appointment at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater during 1961-63, he completed his doctorate from Indiana University and joined the Elementary Education faculty at his alma mater, SFASU. Dr. Franks became Chair of the Department in 1965, Associate Dean of Education in 1990, and Dean of Education in 1992. He retired in August 2000.

Dr. Franks was the recipient of both the Distinguished Professor and Distinguished Alumnus awards by SFA. He also received awards for Outstanding TRTA Membership Recruitment by the Nacogdoches County Retired Teachers Association; the United Way for Board Chair service; the Ted Booker Memorial Award for Outstanding Contributions to Teacher Education; and Region VII Education Service Center for service on the EPII Coordinating Board.

Appreciation for devoted and invaluable service was made to Dr. Franks by the Texas Student Education Association; 30 Years of Service to SFASU; Texas Student Education Association; Texas Association for the Improvement in Reading; Shady Grove Cemetery Association; Nacogdoches ISD Board of Trustees; and the Region 13 Education Service Center. His professional association memberships included Phi Delta Kappa professional fraternity; Kappa Delta Pi Honor Society in Education; National Education Association and Texas State Teacher Association lifetime memberships. During his career, he was also a member of the Noon Lions Club, served on the NISD Board of Trustees, and was a charter member of the Stephen F. Austin State University Vista Club. 

Among the numerous contributions made during his career, Dr. Franks took great pride in his part to bring a doctoral program in educational leadership to SFA; the establishment of the SFA/NISD Charter School; the expansion of the SFA Early Childhood Laboratory; and the passage of the bond issue that resulted in the construction of the present Nacogdoches High School.

In retirement, Dr. Franks enjoyed serving the Timpson Area Genealogical and Historical Society with interesting programs and providing leadership on the Board of Directors. He served on the Board of the Shady Grove Cemetery Association and was responsible for acquiring the marking of historical designation of the cemetery.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Nacogdoches from 1963 until his death, where he taught Sunday School, sang in the Chancel Choir, and served in numerous leadership positions through the years. Tom Franks was a founding member of the Heart to Heart Chorus and also sang in the Joyful Sound Choir.

Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 3, 2019 at First United Methodist Church with Dr. Jeff McDonald officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 2, 2019 at Laird Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be Shawn Askey, Jerry Fehlker, Seth Franks, Hollis Smith, Kevin Hurley, and Eck Franks.

Serving as honorary pallbearer will be Randy Franks.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The SFASU Alumni Association’s B.D. and Anna Franks Scholarship Fund or the First United Methodist Church of Nacogdoches.
