When the 3-0 Mount Enterprise Wildcats varsity football team came to Shelbyville Dragons Stadium on Friday to face the 0-3 Dragons for their 2025 Homecoming, few likely thought they would witness an electrifying thriller. The game was exciting throughout. Before the dust settled the game had seen 7 lead changes and the contest had been tied up 4 times. At times both squads had led by as much as 15 points but each occasion the other team fought their way back into the game. There is no doubt the difference in this game was senior Wildcat Kaegan Ash who accounted for 7 total touchdowns and four 2-point conversions, including a Shelbyville 2-point attempt which he intercepted and returned the distance of the field to score for Mount Enterprise.

Shelbyville got on the scoreboard first when sophomore kicker Edwin Vasquez kicked a 25-yard field goal to give the Dragons a 3-0 lead at the 6:21 minute mark of the first quarter. Ash answered for the Wildcats soon after when he took a first down run 72-yards for his first touchdown. He added on a conversion run and MEHS led 8-3 with 6:04 remaining in the first period.

Shelbyville bounced back on a 3-play 55-yard scoring drive which saw sophomore quarterback Gavin McDonald hit junior wideout Jaylon Pitts for a 45-yard touchdown with 5:02 left in the first stanza. Vasquez added an extra point kick and SHS led 10-8.

Wildcats junior quarterback Joshua Bennett hit Ash on a 58-Yard scoring strike with 2:08 left in the first frame and then he hooked up with Ash again on a conversion pass to give MEHS a 16-10 lead.

With 8:49 left in the second frame Dragons junior rusher Dallas Murry scored on a 4-yard touchdown run and another Vasquez kick conversion gave SHS a narrow 17-16 advantage. Just moments later junior Hunter Harvey intercepted a Wildcat pass and the Dragons went on a 69-yard scoring drive. On the final play of the drive junior runningback Ronnie Williams scored on a 1-yard touchdown run with 5:47 left in the second quarter and the Dragons led 23-16 after the point after attempt failed.

With 2:22 left in the first half McDonald hit junior Bryant Scarbrough for a 15-yard touchdown reception and Vasquez kicked the extra point kick through to give SHS a 30-16 lead.

The third quarter saw Ash score on a 72-yard reception from Bennett cutting the Dragons lead to 30-22 at the 11:21 mark. Williams then capped a 67-yard Dragons scoring drive with a 1-yard touchdown run. He added on a 2-point conversion run and Shelbyville led 37-22 with 7:10 left in the third frame.

Ash scored on a 56-yard run at the 4:48 mark of the third period to pull Mount Enterprise to within 37-30. Another 11-yard touchdown by Ash at the 2:40 mark gave MEHS a narrow 38-37 lead.

Shelbyville’s next drive went 50 yards but ended on a touchback when the football was fumble into the endzone. The third period ended with the Wildcats holding a 38-37 lead.

Ash added a 50-yard scoring run to his resume with 10:06 left in the fourth and final period. The Wildcat conversion attempt failed but they led 44-37. Williams scored a Dragons 10-yard rushing touchdown with 7:27 left in the game and Vasquez tied the game at 44-44 with a point after kick.

A 75-yard touchdown on a direct snap to Ash in Wildcat formation, and a conversion run, gave MEHS a 52-44 lead with 7:04 left to play.

Williams scored on a 52-yard touchdown run at the 5:36 mark to pull SHS to within 52-50 but disaster struck on the 2-point try when Ash intercepted a Dragons pass and raced the distance of the field to gain a 2-point conversion and extend the Wildcat’s lead to 54-50. Ash wasn’t through. He scored a 6-yard rushing touchdown at the 2:16 mark of the final period to give MEHS a 62-50 score.

If anyone thought that this game was over they were wrong. Shelbyville mounted a 53-yard scoring drive of their own. McDonald hit Detoris Hubbard, Scarbrough, and Hunter Harvey for completions. Harvey’s catch and run covered 37-yards and found the endzone. A Vasquez point after kick pulled Shelbyville to within 62-57 of the MEHS lead but proved to be the final score at the 1:27 minute mark.

The Dragons now 0-4 will next host the Carlisle Indians on Friday, September 26, 2025 at Dragons Stadium with kickoff at 7 p.m. This will be Shelbyville’s last non-conference game of the regular season. Carlisle is 2-2 and they lost to Brook Hill on Friday by a 33-28 score.
