Paxton Issues Consumer Alert Warning Texans of Potential Scams Following Nationwide CrowdStrike Outage

July 20, 2024 – Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton warned Texans of potential scams following the widespread CrowdStrike service outage.

Texans should be aware that bad actors can use cybersecurity incidents to take advantage of consumers. By following certain steps, the public can significantly decrease their likelihood of falling prey to a scam that could compromise personal data privacy and devices.

Educational Partnership Between OAG Cold Case, Missing Persons Unit, TSU School of Criminal Justice and Criminology

April 3, 2024 – Attorney General Ken Paxton has announced a partnership between the Office of the Attorney General (“OAG”) and Texas State University (“TXST”) to facilitate educational opportunities and bring more investigative power to solving cold cases. The TXST program, termed the Cold Case Team, is a one-year internship program enabling students in the Texas State University School of Criminal Justice and Criminology to work with the OAG Cold Case and Missing Persons Unit (CCMPU).

AG Paxton Secures Settlement with Major Internet Provider to Address Consumer Complaints (Altice)

Attorney General Paxton Recognizes October As Domestic Violence Awareness Month

October 17, 2023 – For the ninth consecutive year, Office of the Attorney General (“OAG”) employees will participate in the Domestic Violence Awareness Month (“DVAM”) “Go Purple Day.” On Thursday, October 19th, OAG employees are encouraged to wear purple in support of survivors and raise awareness of and take a stand against domestic violence.

AG Announces Distribution of $141 Million to TurboTax Customers

May 4, 2023 - Attorney General Paxton has announced that $141 million will be distributed to Intuit TurboTax customers who were misled into paying Intuit to file their federal tax returns. Approximately 4.4 million consumers nationwide will receive a payment, including more than 465,000 Texas residents. The payments are the result of a multistate settlement reached with Intuit in 2022.

AG Secures Major Victory Against Texas Robocallers that Made Billions of Illegal Calls

March 20, 2023 - Attorney General Paxton won judgments shutting down a massive robocall operation involving John Caldwell Spiller II and his business partner, Jakob Mears. Spiller and Mears owned the Texas-based Rising Eagle Capital Group LLC, JSquared Telecom LLC, and Rising Eagle Capital Group–Cayman.  
 
These defendants blasted billions of illegal robocalls to people across the country, bombarding Texans with hundreds of millions of robocalls, many of which were made to people whose numbers were registered with the Do Not Call Registry.  
   

Paxton Secures $168M for Texas in Opioid Agreement with Walmart

Shelby County, Texas Included in Settlement Agreement

December 16, 2022 – Attorney General Paxton announced a planned $3.1 billion settlement with Walmart, with over $168 million designated for Texas, for Walmart’s role in the nationwide opioid epidemic. The agreement will largely track the terms of the Global Prescription Opioid Litigation Settlement Agreement with the opioids distributors that was executed in July 2021.
