December 22, 2015 (Album) - Hundreds of children attended the Center First United Pentecostal Church (FUPC) Shelby County's Ultimate Christmas Party on December 12, 2015 beginning the holiday with a filling meal and gifts.

Center FUPC, in conjunction with the Shelby County Attorney Toy Drive, host the event annually and this year had around 450 children and adults in attendance. Volunteers from the church served everyone in their events area, and no one left without having the opportunity to dine.

Once everyone had eaten, groups were escorted to the front of the building where Shelby County Attorney staff were waiting with other volunteers to hand out gifts to the children as they left, with most receiving two gifts.

"We call it the Ultimate Christmas Party, first of all we're thankful to be able to team up with County Attorney Gary Rholes. We think the people of Shelby County are the ultimately best people, and we're thankful for the opportunity to minister to and serve them," said Andy Wilson, Center FUPC Pastor.

December 22, 2015 - Betty Miller was chosen by the Center Garden Club for the December, "Garden of the Month." When you drive by her home on Logansport Street, she is normally working in her yard. She is dedicated to the beauty of flowers.

In the backyard, you will see a bed of beautiful greens. Watch out for those rabbits!

Thank you Betty, for all your hard work.

December 22, 2015 - Center Christian Fellowship made their annual toy donation on Sunday, December 20, 2015 to Santa Rides a Motorcycle. CCF would like to thank Ed Roberts and his team for their dedication to bringing Christmas cheer to the children of Shelby County.

December 21, 2015 - On Saturday, December 19, 2015 the youth from Ramah Baptist Church Tenaha went to Brookshire Brothers in Center, TX and purchase enough food to fill 50 bags to help stock the shelves at the Shelby County Outreach Center. The kids had been collecting change from Church members, family and friends for several months. They set their goal at $500 and reached it just in time to purchase the food before Christmas.

This has become a favorite tradition for the kids at Ramah. They enjoy doing the shopping rather than just giving the money. They have learned to work together and help those in need.

This is the season for giving and the kids would love to invite you to follow their footsteps. The Outreach Center depends on donations to help those families who are in need and appreciate all donations. They also have an Angel Tree at WalMart in Center and are still in need of help with these gifts. It's not too late to help some children this Christmas who might otherwise not have a Christmas. The deadline to submit gifts from the Angel Tree is Tuesday, December 22. From the Youth and members at Ramah Baptist Church we all wish you a Blessed and Merry Christmas.

Brookshire Brothers store director proudly presents Cookrell with his prize, a money card with which he can purchase his yearly supply of Blue Bell.

Now that Blue Bell has made their return, they have made effort to keep local stores in stock.

December 16, 2014 - Secret Santa once again visited the Center Police Department enlisting the help of two officers to help deliver surprise Christmas gifts to unsuspecting travelers.

Lieutenant Jeremy Bittick and Sergeant Ricky King were the two lucky officers who were given the opportunity to spread Christmas cheer on Friday, December 11, 2015.

Most of the gifts were distributed by way of initiating traffic stops and then presenting the unsuspecting drivers with an envelope with the Center Police Department shield and "In God We Trust" printed on the outside. Each recipient of the gift opened their letter to find a $100 bill and Christmas wishes from the anonymous Santa and the Center Police Department.

In total $1,000 was distributed by Santa's helpers dressed in blue. This is the second year Secret Santa has enlisted officers to help spread the Christmas joy.

This year the experience seemed to have a little more meaning, as 2015 has been heavy laden with national news telling tales of unfortunate incidents between officers and citizens. Secret Santa filled the day with positive experiences and those receiving the gift were extremely grateful. Some were quiet and a little shocked to say the least, others responded with great big hugs, some shed a few tears, but all felt the Christmas spirit around them.

The officers enjoyed the opportunity of sharing good news and goodwill with all. Thank you Secret Santa.

Special thanks to Police Chief Jim Albers for allowing his officers to help Secret Santa deliver some early Christmas presents!

Merry Christmas to all!

December 17, 2015 - The annual Celebration of Our Lady of Guadalupe Procession was held on the Center square on Saturday, December 12, 2015. St. Therese Catholic Church members began their procession on the square and traveled to the church location on CR 2974 with the assistance of the Center Police Department and Center Fire Department.

As the procession moved forward from the square, Center Police Officers both led and followed the parade as it traveled Nacogdoches Street to Wheeler Street. When the procession approached the intersection with Hurst Street, Center Police Officers and Center firemen blocked traffic until the procession had completed their crossing of Hurst Street.

December 16, 2015 - Law enforcement vehicles around Shelby County now feature the United States national motto, “In God We Trust.”

Across the country, law enforcement have been adding the national motto which was adopted by Congress in 1956 to their vehicles. In November 2015, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton responded in a letter to a question posed by Texas Senator Charles Perry concerning the Childress Police Department having decided to display the motto on its patrol vehicles. Paxton's response, in summary, was "A court is likely to conclude that a law enforcement department's display of the national motto, 'In God We Trust,' on its patrol vehicles is permissible under the Establishment Clause of the United States Constitution."

On Monday, December 14, 2015 the SCSO patrol vehicles had Beverly Slatter with The Sign Shop add the words to their vehicles.

Shelby County Sheriff Willis Blackwell said, “Every headline you read today involves violence of some sort. The threat of terrorism is real and in forefront of our thoughts and conversations. The citizens of Shelby County have the right to feel safe and protected. God is being removed from our everyday life and I want the county to know that we stand behind our faith in God and trust him to protect the citizens of Shelby County.”

Center Police Officer John Welch had the phrase installed on his vehicle a couple of weeks ago by Ultra Shade Plus who did the task as a donation. The Center Police Department is in the process of having "In God We Trust" added to more of their vehicles.
