May 11, 2015 - Over the last two months the Lakes Area Beekeepers Association has been raising money with a raffle for a Warré hive built by club member James Laughlin.
The money is used to support the LABA student sponsorship program which helps younger members with their beekeeping endeavors. More than $250 was raised and on Tuesday, May 5th, at the monthly meeting, the drawing was held. Lloyd Duplant, of Hemphill, Texas, was the winner. Mr. Duplant is an experienced beekeeper and said he was looking forward to trying out this type of hive.
The Lakes Area Beekeepers Association meets the first Tuesday of each month at the San Augustine County Chamber of Commerce building, 611 W Columbia St, San Augustine, TX, 75972. We welcome all interested in beekeeping to join us.
May 11, 2015 - A proclamation was signed by Shelby County Judge Allison Harbison on May 11, 2015 in recognition of National Nursing Home Week.
The proclamation reads as follows:
Whereas, all residents of Shelby County have been given a proud legacy build upon the past and present contributions of our country's elderly and disabled people; and
Whereas, we salute the residents of our nursing facilities, many of whom planted the seeds that made our communities grow and prosper; and
Whereas, nursing facilities with dedicated staff members provide caring and supportive services that enable the highest possible quality of life for our loved ones; and
Whereas, we reflect and celebrate the past accomplishments of our seniors and people with disabilities while anticipating the possibilities of the future; and
Whereas, member facilities of the American Health Care Association and the Texas Health Care Association are providing a host of activities in observance3 of National Nursing Home Week guided by this year's theme, "Bring On the Fiesta!", beginning May 10th.
Now, therefore, I , Judge Allison Harbison, Judge of Shelby County, Hereby proclaim May 10th through May 16th, 2015 as National Nursing Home Week.
In the County of Shelby, State of Texas and urge all citizens to honor and serve the individuals who laid the foundations of Shelby County by participating in this year's National Nursing Home Week observance at one of our country's nursing facilities.
May 11, 2015 - Holiday Nursing Center hosted a Mother’s Day celebration on Sunday, May 10th. Prizes were given to the “wisest mother”, who was Golda Punkoney, age 99, and the youngest mother which was Tanya Belin. Thank you to all who participated in our appreciation of our Mothers.

May 8, 2015 - A new Roughrider Scholarship was established in memory of Delores Ann Walker after a donation was presented in her me
mory on Tuesday, April 21, 2015 during Rotary meeting.
Rotarian John Black spoke, "On behalf of the Jetton Family - Mitchell, Virginia, all the siblings, Michele, Steve, Marcy and our agency (JBA Financial), we want to present to the Catherine Pinkston Roughrider Scholarship Foundation a $5,000 check [in memory of Delores Walker.]"
She graduated from Center High School in 1954 and then attended the Massey Business College in Nacogdoches where she received a degree. In January of 1967, Walker went to work for Mitchell Jetton and McNeil Moore at the then Lake Country Agency where she worked until January of 2015. During 48 years of service, she also was a volunteer with the 4-H program and a volunteer with the Children's Ministry at First Baptist Church. To Mrs. Walker children and students were very special in her life.
Reflecting on his own experiences with Walker, John Black said it was obvious to him when he married Jetton's youngest daughter, Michele, in 1977 how important she was to the family. When Black joined the agency in 1988, Walker took him under her wing just like everyone else.
John Black said, "There was never a more loyal employee or harder worker, never one that I have come across that took the interest of our clients and always wanting to do the very best for them. One of her favorite saying when I would go in and say 'Well, what did you find out about so and so's policy.' She would say, 'well, I'm going to call back until I get the right answer that I want.' That was just her way of doing it. She would be persistent, she would be dogmatic in her efforts of making sure that the clients always got the best possible scenario that they possibly could."
Delores Ann Walker passed away in April of 2015. She is survived by her husband Gene Walker of Center; two children, Laura Walker of Center and Steve Walker and wife, Catherine of Buna; grandchildren; and two brothers.
May 8, 2015 - Devon Energy Corporation presented a $4,000 donation to the Shelby County Sheriff's Office (SCSO) for the purchase of 13 new cameras for the department on Friday, May 8, 2015. Shelby County Sheriff Willis Blackwell accepted the check presented by Todd Bush, Production Foreman for Devon.
Sheriff Blackwell apprised the office had purchased cameras several years ago with what money was available; however, they weren't of a high quality. The new cameras will serve the department much better because they have night vision and the video quality is much better.
Following the check presentation, Bush expressed Devon is a proud supporter of the military and law enforcement.

May 7, 2015 - Miss Lillian Marie Green, age 5, has been chosen as a State Finalist in the National 
American Miss Texas Pageant to be held on June 19 and 20 at the beautiful Royal Sonesta, Houston, Texas. The pageant is held for girls ages four through six.
The newly crowned Miss Princess Texas will receive a $1,000 cash award, the official crown and banner, a bouquet of roses, and air transportation to compete in the national pageant at Disneyland in California. She has the chance to represent the great State of Texas for the entire year. She will also tour Hollywood.
Pageants are held for girls ages four to eighteen, in five different age groups. Contestants will compete in 4 overall categories including Formal Wear Modeling, Personal Introduction, Interview and Community Service Project. National American Miss also offers optional contests such as the Top Model Search, Talent, Actress, and so much more!
National American Miss is dedicated to celebrating America's greatness and encouraging its future leaders. Each year, the pageant awards thousands in scholarships and prizes to recognize and assist in the development of young ladies nationwide. All activities are age appropriate and family-oriented.
The National American Miss Pageant System is the largest in the nation. The focus of this organization is to create future leaders and to equip them with real-world skills to make their dreams a reality. The program is based on inner beauty, as well as poise and presentation, and offers an "All American spirit of fun for family and friends." Emphasis is placed on the importance of gaining self-confidence and learning new skills, such as good attitudes about competition, as well as setting and achieving personal goals.

May 7, 2015 - The Bone Hill Foundation would like to congratulate all Seniors Graduating from Center, Timpson, Shelbyville, Joaquin, and Tenaha. We encourage all graduates to seek out further education in College or Vocational Schools to prepare you for the future.
The Bone Hill Foundation was established in 1967 by Will Bridges with the goal of helping those in need. Originally this property was called the Bone Hill Ranch.
During a very long drought many cows died and were dragged to the top of a hill. The story goes that since the land was more Pasteur than timber that for miles around a person could see the white bones of the cows and thus the name stuck. Bone Hill Ranch.
In 1991, the board was reorganized and the focus was placed on scholarships for students to attend Traditional colleges or Vocational Colleges.
These scholarships have been awarded to high school seniors thru an application process and a committee in their local high school that makes all final selections. The Bone Hill Foundation does not select students for scholarships.
Additionally funds have been given in the past to Stephen F. Austin University, Angelina College and Panola College.
In 2014 approximately $240,000 was awarded to Shelby County High Schools, Stephen F. Austin State University, University of Texas at Tyler, Texas A&M University, Angelina and Panola College.
A major part of Bone Hill assets and what generates cash flow for the foundation is timber resources. Working closely with Stephen F. Austin University and their Forestry Department and Professor and Bone Hill Foundation board member Gary Konrad, the foundation has developed a management plan that includes timber resources, wildlife and the entire property providing a balanced plan for timber and the surrounding natural resources.
The management and sale of timber provides income to the Foundation, job creation in the timber industry and most importantly scholarships for students from Shelby County.
The Bone Hill Foundation has provided over $2,800,000 in scholarships for Shelby County Students.
