August 15, 2018 - A combined meeting of Rotary Club and Lions Club met Tuesday, August 7, 2018 to welcome their guest speaker Louie Gohmert, U.S. Representative from Texas 1st Congressional District.
August 6, 2018 - Greg Grant, an award-winning horticulturist, conservationist, and writer from Arcadia, Texas, wrote an article for the Arbor Gate Blog on August 6th about the topic of ribbon cane syrup and included a "Goodbye to Willie Swindle." Willie Swindle was a Shelby County local from the Possum Trot community and he was known for making ribbon cane syrup. He passed away the end of July at the age of 103.
August 1, 2018 - Use caution traveling down Nacogdoches Street. Work crews are detouring traffic near the intersection of Nacogdoches and Wheeler Street.
July 24, 2018 - (Declaration of Disaster Order) - Shelby County Judge Allison Harbison has initiated a Burn Ban for Shelby County effective Tuesday, July 24, 2018.
The Shelby County judge placed a ban on burning outdoors. Due to the extreme drought time in which the county is located, it is prohibited to burn any type of outdoor fire. Please do not burn trash, tree leaves or anything involving flames.
July 24, 2018 - An immediate temporary suspension of Justice of the Peace Precinct 4 Jenny Hicks was filed in the 123rd Judicial District Court, Judge Leann Rafferty presiding, and served by Constable Precinct 3 Roy Cheatwood on Tuesday, July 24, 2018 effectively removing her from office.
July 20, 2018 - Saturday activites happening in Center, Texas.
The Daughters of the Republic of Texas will have the Historic Courthouse open Saturday, July 21, 2018 from 10am until 4pm for tours of the courthouse. The DRT will also have the traveling trunk at the courthouse which has a wide variety of items pioneers would have used daily during the time of the Republic of Texas, 1836 to Feb 19, 1846.
The Rio Theatre will also a Saturday matinee on July 21st at 1:30pm. Showing is Incredibles 2.
