July 21, 2022 - Ladies, this article is for you especially. Men are not as affected by the color of their clothes as you ladies. So, this is for ladies to consider. The color that you wear the most has a huge influence on your mood, attitude, and how you are seen by others. When you purchase new clothes, you may give them more attention, particularly after reading about what the colors that you wear say about you. The following are eleven colors that are closely tied to your personality,
July 11, 2022 - I can recall that back in my early days in San Augustine, Texas there were four family doctors who treated our family at various times. I recall that their names were Dr. Rulfs, Dr. Ellington, Dr. Brake, and Dr. Bennett.
I remember that on several occasions I became ill and my father, Cecil, called Dr. Brake to come to our house and check me out. I still recall his rather large, black, doctoring bag which contained his exam equipment. On rare terrifying occasions he would give me a shot to help cure what ailed me.
June 27, 2022 - You may be like me and enjoy puns. They are short and to the point, and sometimes require a bit of thinking in order to get the point of the pun. What is a pun, anyway? Going way back in time we find an Italian word “puntiglio” which means “a fine point.” It is hence a verbal quibble, and is most likely the source of the English word “punctilious.”
June 10, 2022 - The other day I met a young woman who told me that we were kin to each other. She said that her great-great-grandfather was also mine. I said to her, “Then we are kissing cousins”. It seems that she had never heard that term before. So, just what are “kissing cousins”, you ask?
The official definition is this: “A relative close enough to be kissed in salutation, hence anyone with whom a person is fairly intimate.” Generally speaking, that means that first cousins are considered off limits, but second, third, and fourth cousins are fair game.
May 31, 2022 - The pay telephone has been around for a long time. I can recall that there was a pay telephone booth in the first floor of the courthouse. There was one in the Wyman Roberts Funeral Home here in San Augustine, Texas. These, of course, have been long gone. What happened to them?
May 23, 2022 - P.T Barnum was right when he said that “there’s a sucker born every minute.” I am living proof of that, having been taken for a sucker while on a vacation trip in 1965. I hope that my experience will be a warning to others who let their eyes overpower their brains.
May 13, 2022 - When I was growing up in the 1940’s and 1950’s in San Augustine, Texas, I can recall only two newspapers, the San Augustine Tribune, and the Beaumont Enterprise that were common to us. As far as I can recall, the Tribune was never delivered by newsboys. The Enterprise was usually delivered by an adult in an automobile.
In the big cities newsboys were commonly used by news papers to deliver their papers in neighborhoods. It would appear that these newsboys are no longer being used by the few remaining large newspapers across the nation.
May 2, 2022 - I realize that I am getting old and set in my ways, but I am constantly being surprised by what is going on in our country these days. I am not a great fan of computers, but I have to admit that they have about taken over our country. A good example is that a new computer form of money has taken off and is invading most of our lives. The most prominent one is called “Cryptocurrency”. What in the heck is this new form of legal tender? Since I had never heard of it until recently, I had to do a little research. I discovered the following items:
April 26, 2022 - Back in the 1940s this little road was called McElroy Lane. It has been renamed County Road 105 for 9-1-1 emergency purposes. As a young boy, McElroy lane was my very favorite place to ride my bicycle almost every day. It was almost directly across the highway from my home and provided much entertainment for a growing boy.
April 6, 2022 - I was drug scratching and hollering into the computer world around 1968 when working for a major insurance company in Houston, Texas. I have never been a fan of computers, although I now own one and use it regularly. It was while using my computer that I was introduced to “passwords” and “pin numbers.” That was OK, but things are now getting out of control.
