July 20, 2020 - In softball, a popular concept of batting (in every part of the country), is for the batter to set up in the batter’s box with her front foot forward of the plate. They, too many coaches and most players, have not considered that method as completely as they might have.

When I ask a player why she sets up so far forward, the most frequent answer I get is, “when the pitcher throws a drop pitch, I can hit it before it drops too low to hit.”

As a player, has any coach ever offered that advice to you? Probably. As a coach, could you even begin to know how many times you have uttered those words to one of your players? Too many to count, right?

June 22, 2020 - This week’s letter is the last of three that you may say to yourself “I already knew that,” and you probably did already “know that.” But, next week, with Issue #Four, I will begin to ease you into places where few coaches and certainly no young baseball or softball player has ever gone. If your desire for “learning” the game is as powerful as your desire for “playing” the game, you will never want the issues to stop.
