Mother Urges Drivers to Take Personal Responsibility, Never Drink and Drive

TxDOT’s ‘Plan While You Can’ campaign aimed at reminding Texas drivers to find a sober ride this holiday season

December 17, 2018 Austin – It was the middle of the night in 2006 when Debra Vasquez was awakened by the heart-wrenching phone call informing her that her 16-year-old daughter, Erica, and 5-year-old nephew, Elias, had been killed by a drunk driver. It was later revealed the drunk driver had two prior DWIs.

Guidelines for Placing Political Signage

September 24, 2018 – As mid-term elections draw near, candidates and their supporters are once again posting signs of support. The Texas Department of Transportation would like to remind candidates that election law dictates where campaign signs can be placed along Texas roadways.

“We are beginning to see a lot of signs along the right of ways prior to the November election and we want everyone to be aware that we are required to remove signage of any kind when it is placed on the right of way,” said Rhonda Oaks, public information officer for the Lufkin District.

Unrestrained Fatalities Increasing in Lufkin District

June 1, 2018 Lufkin – As the Click It Or Ticket safety campaign comes to a close on June 2, fatalities from unrestrained motorists have increased in the Lufkin District. State statistics for the fiscal year also show higher fatality rates in rural areas.

Seat belt usage statewide stood at 92-percent for 2017, but the Lufkin District continues to see injuries and fatalities occurring within the past few weeks that are alarming. Wearing a seat belt increases the chances of surviving a crash by 60 percent.

Annual Click It or Ticket Event

May 11, 2018 Lufkin — The Texas Department of Transportation wants Texans to know that even one life lost because someone failed to wear a seat belt is one too many. As part of the annual “Click It or Ticket” campaign, Texas law enforcement officers will increase their efforts from May 21 to June 3 to ticket unbelted drivers and passengers, especially at night.

TxDOT Project Updates for the Lufkin District

May 7, 2018 Lufkin – Warm weather has TxDOT crews busy as construction and maintenance projects continue throughout the nine county district. Motorists should expect delays through the work zones and stay alert to workers and moving equipment. Remember the Move Over Slow Down law requires drivers to either move to another available lane or if no lane is available, reduce speed by 20 miles per hour below the posted speed limit when emergency blue lights are flashing. All schedules are subject to change in inclement weather.
