Unrestrained Fatalities Increasing in Lufkin District

June 1, 2018 Lufkin – As the Click It Or Ticket safety campaign comes to a close on June 2, fatalities from unrestrained motorists have increased in the Lufkin District. State statistics for the fiscal year also show higher fatality rates in rural areas.

Seat belt usage statewide stood at 92-percent for 2017, but the Lufkin District continues to see injuries and fatalities occurring within the past few weeks that are alarming. Wearing a seat belt increases the chances of surviving a crash by 60 percent.

Annual Click It or Ticket Event

May 11, 2018 Lufkin — The Texas Department of Transportation wants Texans to know that even one life lost because someone failed to wear a seat belt is one too many. As part of the annual “Click It or Ticket” campaign, Texas law enforcement officers will increase their efforts from May 21 to June 3 to ticket unbelted drivers and passengers, especially at night.

TxDOT Project Updates for the Lufkin District

May 7, 2018 Lufkin – Warm weather has TxDOT crews busy as construction and maintenance projects continue throughout the nine county district. Motorists should expect delays through the work zones and stay alert to workers and moving equipment. Remember the Move Over Slow Down law requires drivers to either move to another available lane or if no lane is available, reduce speed by 20 miles per hour below the posted speed limit when emergency blue lights are flashing. All schedules are subject to change in inclement weather.

Two New Construction Projects Beginning

March 12, 2018 Lufkin – Two pre-construction meetings were held recently, signaling new construction projects beginning in San Augustine and Nacogdoches counties.

Work has begun on FM 711 in San Augustine County that will include the reconstruction and widening of pavement to 24-foot from the Shelby County line to US 96. Crews are preparing right of ways and extending culverts.

TxDOT Alert: Loop 500 from US 96 to SH 7 East Closed (Update: 6:46)

February 28, 2018 - Update - 6:46pm: Loop 500 in Shelby County is now open to traffic following an earlier HazMat spill. All lanes have been cleared and are open. Drive safely.


February 28, 2018 - ALERT: SL 500 from US 96 to SH 7 East in Shelby County is closed after a hazardous spill. Also, cleanup is ongoing on US 96 and SH 7 East at the intersections near the loop. Cleanup could take most of the day. Avoid the area and prepare for delays as crews clear these areas.

Event Scheduled to Provide Opportunities to Contractors

February 14, 2018 Lufkin – The Texas Department of Transportation, the Regional Hispanic Contractors Association, Stephen F. Austin State University and the Angelina College Procurement Assistance Center are sponsoring an event to encourage and highlight upcoming subcontracting opportunities for highway and building construction in East Texas.

The event, Projects Adding Value by Expanding Diversity (PAVED), will be held at Angelina College on February 22 from 3:30 to 6 pm in the Community Services Building, CS 104.
