DETCOG Accepting Applications for Solid Waste Grants

September 18, 2023 - Deep East Texas Council of Governments (DETCOG) is now taking applications for funding of Solid Waste Projects for FY 2024. DETCOG anticipates awarding grants totaling $67,500.

Each application will be judged by the DETCOG Regional Solid Waste Advisory Committee (RSWAC) in accordance with the RSWAC Project Review and Scoring Guidelines and DETCOG’s Regional Solid Waste Management Plan. Grant awards will be made by the DETCOG Board after it receives the RSWAC recommendations.

September 15, 2023 - The 47th Annual East Texas Poultry Festival Queen’s Scholarship Pageant will be held Saturday, September 30th and reigning Queen Sayre Hall will crown the 2023 Miss East Texas Poultry Festival Queen in the Center High School Cafetorium. The coronation ceremony will begin at 7pm. General admission is $5. Tables and reserved seats may be purchased through the Chamber of Commerce at 936-598-3682.

September 15, 2023 – Car seats work. Just ask Mandy Watson who was in a head-on crash with her 11-month-old and 5-year-old as they were going to lunch more than a decade ago.

“Immediately after the crash, I climbed in the back seat. In that moment I knew it worked. I knew their car seats did everything they were supposed to do, because they were still intact, still in place, and I could hear my babies crying,” said Watson.

I've always loved storms. When the thunder starts to rumble and the lightning starts to flash... I go outside! It's a wonder I'm still alive to write this. Last night we had a nice little storm and, as I set on the porch and watched it, I was reminded of a story about wind and rain and floods - a story that ends a famous sermon.
