October 10, 2023 - The Center Garden Club will be meeting on Wednesday, October 11 at 11:30. The meeting will be held at the AgriLife building located at 266 Nacogdoches Street in Center. The lecture topic will be Frontier Medicines and will be given by the Daughters of the Republic.

Austin State University’s Omicron Delta Kappa hosted a kickoff for the Leaders of Tomorrow program with a retreat Saturday in the Baker Pattillo Student Center and Norton HPE Complex on campus, marking the beginning of a yearlong mentorship with Nacogdoches County eighth graders.

October 7, 2023 - It has been a little while since I retired from the ministry. I certainly miss studying and working on sermons, writing news articles for the local news outlets, and other associated endeavors—but most of all, I miss the folks at Paxton Methodist Church. I decided to ask the various news outlets if they would print an article by me every once in awhile about this and that. This will be my second attempt. The first article was from when I broke my hip.

Texas Pollinator BioBlitz Kicks off Friday, Oct. 6

October 6, 2023 - From Oct. 6-22, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) will kick off the eighth annual Texas Pollinator BioBlitz, celebrating the bees, wasps, butterflies, moths, beetles, flies, hummingbirds, nectar-feeding bats, and other animals that serve as pollinators across Texas.

Join event partners TPWD, National Butterfly Center, Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, National Wildlife Federation and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to celebrate the importance of pollinators.

World War II Veteran Receives Over 7,200 Cards on 100th Birthday

October 6, 2023 — Today, Veterans Land Board (VLB) Chairwoman and Texas Land Commissioner Dr. Dawn Buckingham M.D., is honored to update Texans on U.S. Army Veteran and Clyde W. Cosper Texas State Veterans Home resident Ethelyn Szad Bell's request to receive 100 cards for her 100th birthday on October 4th. In a stunning show of support for this incredible Texas Veteran, Mrs. Bell received over 7,200 cards from across our state and nation.

Today is the second day of our county's annual event, Poultry Fest. All the excitement happens right across the street from our church in our town square and around our historic 1885 courthouse. If you're local, I hope you'll stop by the First Baptist booth between seven and ten tonight - I'll be selling ice cream! And all the profits go toward mission projects.
