New USDA Study on Consumer Kitchen Behavior Underscores the Importance of Food Safety Education Month

Lack of Handwashing Continues to be a Concern

September 20, 2023 - The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is releasing during Food Safety Education Month the results from the final year of a five-year study that observed how consumers prepared meals. The study was produced by USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) as part of their efforts to highlight the importance of safe food handling practices.

Hunter Education 101 Courses Offer Hands-on Hunting Opportunities for Beginners

September 20, 2023 - Fall hunting kicked off this month with the start of dove season, but it’s never too late to learn the skill and value hunting brings to Texas wildlife through upcoming hunter education classes. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s (TPWD) Hunter Education Program offers in-person learning events through the end of February, which combine a classroom course with beginner hunting opportunities in the field with experts.

Request for Bids Shelby County Road and Bridge

September 20, 2023 - Shelby County Road and Bridge is accepting bids for road materials for FY23-24.  

If you are interested in submitting a bid packet, please contact Shelby County Treasurer, Ann Blackwell for a packet. The bid packets are to be returned by US mail or delivered in person to the Shelby County Treasurer’s office on the 2nd floor of the Shelby County Courthouse no later than 3pm on Thursday, September 28, 2023.

Bid opening will be held on September 29, 2023 at 9am in the courtroom of the Shelby County Courthouse. 

Forest Service Waives Day-use Fees for National Public Lands Day

September 19, 2023 – The National Forests and Grasslands in Texas are waiving fees at day-use recreation sites on September 23 for National Public Lands Day.

“This year marks 30 years of celebrating National Public Lands Day. I encourage everyone to enjoy the grasslands or forests this Saturday and every day possible,” Forest Supervisor Kimpton Cooper said.

Camping fees remain in effect, but day-use fees are waived on Saturday, September 23, at these recreation areas and trails:
