TPWD Summer Photo Contest Winner; “Fall in Love With Your Park”

October 5, 2023 - The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department wrapped up the summer portion of the Texas State Parks Centennial Photo Contest, choosing a winner from more than 740 entries. The winning photo for the “Keepin’ it Cool at Texas State Parks” summer theme was taken by Heather Averill and features an otherworldly underwater view of Balmorhea State Park’s spring-fed pool.

A great Shelby County tradition begins tomorrow - Poultry Fest! But, there's a great First Baptist Center tradition that happens again tonight. On the eve of Poultry Fest each year, our church has the honor and blessing of hosting a supper for all the carnival workers. At 5:30 this evening, just off our historic town square, we'll share food and encouragement with all the "carnies".

Forest Service Seeks Applicants for Recreation Advisory Committee

October 3, 2023 – The USDA Forest Service is seeking nominations to fill 11 positions on the Southern Region Recreation Resource Advisory Committee.

The committee is slated to meet once or twice a year to provide recommendations on recreation fees for national forests and grasslands in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and the territory of Puerto Rico.

TPWD Rewards Doubled for Reporting Alligator Snapping Turtle Poaching

October 03,2023 — The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) is offering rewards of up to $1,000 for Texans who report poaching of alligator snapping turtles through Texas’ wildlife crime-stoppers program, Operation Game Thief (OGT).  Thanks to additional funds from the agency’s Conservation License Plate Program, the reward can be doubled if the tip leads to convictions for snapping turtle cases.

City of Joaquin Request for Sealed Bids

October 3, 2023 - The City of Joaquin will receive sealed bids for the sale of surplus property (vehicles and equipment). Sealed bids are to be received by the City Secretary at Joaquin City Hall, 124 N. Preston/ P.O. Box 237 Joaquin, TX 75935 no later than 12:00 p.m. noon on October 16,2023. Bids must be on a form provided by the City and indicate the property item number and bid amount. Successful bidders will be notified by telephone and/or email and will have until 3:00 p.m.

October is Deadly Month for Texas Pedestrians

As fall brings less daylight, TxDOT urges drivers to be extra vigilant about protecting pedestrians

October 3, 2023 – Fall and winter months bring shorter days and less light, making it harder for drivers to see—and safely avoid—pedestrians. October saw the highest number of pedestrian crashes in 2022. That’s why TxDOT is using National Pedestrian Safety Month to continue its “Be Safe. Drive Smart.” campaign and remind Texans that pedestrians are our most vulnerable road users.
