March 27, 2023 - Actually. the little pond belonged to our landlord, Mr. Jim Boothe. In 1947, Daddy moved our growing family to the old Jim Boothe rent house across the railroad tracks in East Center, Texas. The house‘s porch had collapsed and had rotted, but we kids loved living there. We all loved to fish and we were within walking distance of several creeks and stock ponds. Weaver’s Pond, The Brick Yard Pond and Carrol’s Pond were only a short walk away.
March 25, 2023 - The lowly chicken has provoked a number of interesting questions in the past, such as: Why did the chicken cross the road, and which came first – the chicken or the egg? These two questions have been pondered for many years, and every person must come to their own personal conclusion. I have decided that the real reason that the chicken crossed the road was because she wanted to get to the other side. Others have stated that she crossed the road to prove to armadillos that it COULD be done.
March 24, 2023 - Texas Center for Infectious Disease commemorates World Tuberculosis Day today with a conference featuring presentations from staff and partners plus tours of the TCID campus in San Antonio.
World TB Day marks the day in 1882 when the bacteria that causes tuberculosis was discovered. The illness continues to impact populations around the world and in Texas. While TB cases in 2020 and 2021 stayed just below 1,000 in the state, provisional data show cases increased here to 1,088 in 2022.
March 23, 2023 - One hundred years ago this week, Lamar University in Beaumont originated as South Park Junior College when the Beaumont ISD superintendent sought to develop plans for a junior college. Later that year, the institution’s doors opened, and the name was changed to Lamar College and later Lamar University. I’m a proud alumnus of Lamar University!

On this day in 1743, Handel’s Messiah was about to be premiered at the Royal Opera House in London. The whole city was talking about this new work, and such a huge crowd was expected that night, that ladies were urged to leave their hoops (from their hoop skirts) at home.

Tonight at First Baptist Center we'll be preparing our Children's Choir and our Adult Choir to sing and sign a special song for Easter. The song is a joyous expression of testimony and praise by Phil Wickham called "Living Hope". We're looking forward to that great moment of worship on that great day.

March 21, 2023 - The Texas Department of State Health Services has issued a health advisory notifying health care providers of reports that an animal tranquilizer called xylazine has been found mixed with illegal drugs distributed in Texas. Law enforcement has identified xylazine in the illegal fentanyl supply in West Texas, and it has been combined with other opioids, benzodiazepines like Xanax, and recreational drugs, leading to at least four reported xylazine-related deaths.
March 21, 2023 - This week is the National Alcohol and Drug Facts Week to raise awareness concerning alcohol and drug use. It began in 2010 as a means of separating fact from fiction. Throughout this week students, educators, healthcare providers, and community partners come together to be educated on substance use and addiction among youth.
