On this day in 1872, Aaron Montgomery Ward sent out the first mail-order catalog. It was a single sheet of paper. Ten years later, his “Wish Book” had grown to 250 pages with 10,000 items that Americans could conveniently order from their homes. At the turn of the century, millions of catalogs were going out. A century later Montgomery Ward declared bankruptcy and closed its last store. But it still exists online. So, you can still order Ward’s merchandise . . . from the convenience of your home.

National Forests and Grasslands in Texas Ready for Extreme Weather

August 17, 2022 – In Texas, we are in the middle of the hurricane season, and historically the strongest storms are in August and September. The National Forest and Grasslands in Texas have hurricane/severe weather plans for our ranger districts, ensuring visitor and employee safety.

District Rangers execute their hurricane or severe weather plans if any storms are approaching. These plans focus on visitor and employee safety.

SWEPCO to Waive Late Fees, Offer Extended Payment Plans to Help with High Bill Concerns

August 16, 2022 – Southwestern Electric Power Co. announced today new measures to help residential customers facing high bills due to increased demand and rising fuel costs.

All SWEPCO residential customers can get their late fees waived and take advantage of an extended payment plan that gives them up to 12 months to pay their bill in full. In some cases, deposits can also be waived. These are similar programs offered during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Texas Hunting, Fishing Licenses on Sale Aug. 15

August 15, 2022 – The beginning of a new hunting season is quickly approaching and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) reminds hunters and anglers to purchase their new licenses for 2022-23. Texas hunting and fishing licenses (except the Year-from-Purchase All-Water Fishing Package) for the current year expire at the end of August. The new licenses for the 2022-23 season go on sale Aug. 15.

USDA Recommends Adding Food Safety Items to Your Back-to-School List

August 15, 2022 – On your next back-to-school shopping trip, make sure to include food safety items on your shopping list to keep school lunches safe. 

“Every day, parents focus on the health and safety of their children, and this focus includes how they prepare and pack lunches,” said Sandra Eskin, Deputy Under Secretary for Food Safety at the U.S. Department of Agriculture. “Because children are particularly at risk for serious foodborne illness, food safety must be at the top of the list when preparing lunches for school and field trips.”

On this day in 1935, Will Rogers was killed in a plane crash in Alaska, along with famed Texas aviator Wiley Post. Rogers was a writer, with over 4000 national newspaper columns to his credit, an actor in over 70 movies and one of the highest paid Hollywood stars, a vaudeville performer, a humorist, and a world traveler, circling the globe three times. What a life!
