Texas Identifies Case of COVID-19 Omicron Variant

December 7, 2021 - The first known Texas case of the COVID-19 B.1.1.529 variant has been identified in a resident of Harris County. The adult female resident was recently diagnosed with COVID-19. Results of genetic sequencing this week showed that the infection was caused by the Omicron variant strain. The case is being investigated by Harris County Public Health and the Texas Department of State Health Services.

USDA Issues Final Pandemic Payments for Timber Harvesters, Haulers

December 3, 2021 - The U.S. Department of Agriculture will begin issuing final pandemic assistance payments to timber harvesters and timber hauling businesses through the Pandemic Assistance for Timber Harvesters and Haulers (PATHH) program starting next week. In total, $200 million will be provided to loggers and log trucking businesses who experienced a gross revenue loss of at least 10% during the period of Jan. 1 through Dec. 1, 2020, compared to the period of Jan. 1 through Dec.

TxDOT Commissioners Approve New Construction Projects

December 1, 2021 – Texas Transportation Commissioners on Tuesday approved more than $457 million in new construction projects statewide, with more than $13.8 million approved for the Lufkin District.

An annual roadway resurfacing project at locations throughout the nine-county district was approved for $11.7 million. Work is expected to begin in late Spring 2022. A preconstruction meeting will be held prior to work beginning. Clark Construction, San Antonio TX, will serve as contractor for the project. No timeline for completion has been set.

Nichols Files for Re-election (Pd Pol Adv)

November 30, 2021 - Last week, State Senator Robert Nichols (R-Jacksonville) filed for re-election for Texas Senate District 3. The newly redrawn district covers much of the existing district including the majority of East Texas. Major changes include picking up the greater part of Jefferson County and losing San Jacinto County and Montgomery County.

"Serving the people of Senate District 3 is a tremendous honor and I seek to continue our important work at the capitol and remain a strong voice for rural Texas," said Nichols.
