May 14, 2021 - One hundred and thirty-three years ago this month, the present Texas Capitol was formally dedicated. On May 16, 1888, the dedication ceremony was held with a service, parade, and a celebration to mark its opening. Over 20,000 people attended the week of festivities. There were military displays, concerts, drill team competitions, and fireworks. Senator Temple Houston, Sam Houston's youngest son, accepted the building on behalf of the state.

Tri-C Head Start Accepting 2021-22 Applications

May 12, 2021 - Tri-C Head Start Center Base and Shelby Home Base are now taking applications for the 2021-2022 program year.

We accept children 6 weeks to 5 years old after September 1.

To complete an application you will need copies of your child’s birth certificate, insurance card, WIC card (if applicable), immunization record, and proof of income (W2, Tax return, SSI/SSD award letter, check stubs, etc.).

ETCF Recognizes Center High School Students with Scholarship

May 11, 2021 - East Texas Communities Foundation has named Center High School (CHS) graduates Baileigh Barrera, Angel Garcia and Kristen Orsak as recipients of the John Harris Scholarship.

Miss Barrera plans to attend Stephen F. Austin State University in the fall focusing on a career in accounting. Miss Barrera was active in volleyball, softball, National Honor Society and was a member of the yearbook staff as a student at Center High School.

Lufkin District Prepares for Hurricane Season

May 11, 2021 – Lufkin District supervisors met Monday for the annual hurricane preparation meeting and outlined actions to take should the East Texas area experience a hurricane or evacuation from the Gulf Coast in the event of a hurricane there.

The 2021 hurricane season begins June 1 and concludes Nov. 30. The Atlantic hurricane season is predicted to be a busy season, with 17 predicted named storms, including eight hurricanes and possibly four major hurricanes.

"Bowhunter By Fall" Aims to Help Archers Get Ready to Hit the Field this Fall

May 11, 2021 – Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s (TPWD) Community Archery Program wants to help Texans learn how to harvest their own meals, join a tradition in the outdoors, and improve on or learn a new skill through “Bowhunter by Fall.” Through monthly and bi-monthly e-newsletters filled with videos and tips, archers can learn how to travel from behind the keyboard to behind the bow just in time for the fall hunting season.

Property Owners Should Soon Start Receiving Appraisal Notices for the 2021 Tax Year

May 10, 2021 - The Shelby County Appraisal District will mail appraisal notices on May 17th. Your city, county, school district and other local taxing units will use the appraisal district’s value to set your 2021 property tax rates.

Under Texas law, county appraisal districts are required to notify property owners about changes in their property’s value. The notice contains important information about the property’s location, its ownership and property tax exemptions that have been applied to the property.
