Shelby County Chamber Announces Grill Fest Winners, Thanks Sponsors

April 26, 2021 - The Shelby County Grill Fest Barbecue Cook-off was held Saturday, April 24 at the Rodeo Arena in Center, Texas, with cook teams from across east Texas and western Louisiana vying for prize money and bragging rights.

The barbecue cook-off was presented by Farmers State Bank and sanctioned by the Lone Star Barbecue Society. The event featured six categories including chicken, ribs, brisket, beans, dessert, and beverage.

The bipartisan proposal has nationwide support from conservationists, hunters, anglers, businesspeople, and the outdoor recreation industry.

Sabine County Beekeepers Monthly Meeting

April 23, 2021 - The Sabine County Beekeepers will meet for our monthly meeting on Monday, May 3 at 6:30pm. We meet every first Monday of the month at 6:30pm at the Sabine County Chamber of Commerce, on the square, downtown Hemphill. We welcome the public to come out and join us. April 23, 2021 - It is a real loss to our country that drive-in movies have died and gone to cinema heaven. They were killed off by the television set, a slow and agonizing death. But I have noticed in the news that a few new ones are sprouting up around the country. I wish them success and a long life. I suppose that I have a fondness for the outside movie due to the fact that my uncle, Ed Buckalew, owned the first (and only) drive-in movie in San Augustine, Texas, history.

April 22, 2021 - On April 21, 1836, General Sam Houston led the Texan Army in a decisive victory over General Santa Anna in the Battle of San Jacinto. The fighting lasted a mere 18 minutes. Though Santa Anna escaped the battlefield and fled, he was captured the next day and held as a prisoner of war for about three weeks until he signed the peace treaty that ended the conflict and paved the way for the Republic of Texas.
