Texas Wildfire Handcrew Receives Honorable Mention in National Challenge

January 26, 2016 - The Lone Star State Type II Initial Attack Crew from Texas A&M Forest Service recently received honorable mention in the 2015 IGNITE the Spark for Leadership Award for its commitment to developing leaders.

The award recognizes leadership development efforts within the wildland fire community. In the spirit of healthy competition, this year’s theme was “Followership is Leadership.”

Mirabeau B Lamar Remembered

January 26, 2016 -  Mirabeau B Lamar is honored as the Father of Texas Education. He was born in Louisville, Georgia on August 16, 1798, the son of John and Rebecca Lamar. When he was ten years old, the family moved to the new capitol of Georgia, Milledgeville. His parents wanted him to have the best education possible and it was here that he attended the academies available. His formal education was small, but he nurtured his interest in history and literature by private study.

Closures and Detours Scheduled on Several Projects

January 25, 2016 LUFKIN – Construction and maintenance work continues this week throughout the nine county Lufkin District with closures and detours scheduled in several areas.

Construction crews in Angelina County are working on the intersection of Spence Street and SL 287 where permanent concrete barriers are being set on SL 287 in the eastbound main lanes near the west end of the project.

AG Paxton Announces New Agency Human Trafficking Unit

January 25, 2016 AUSTIN – Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton recently held a press conference to announce a new unit within the Texas Attorney General’s Office dedicated to combating human trafficking. This new unit will be headed by Deputy Criminal Chief Kirsta Leeburg Melton, an experienced prosecutor with an extensive background in combating human trafficking in Texas.
