On this day, in 2009, Walter Cronkite died. He was the anchorman of the CBS Evening News from 1962 to 1981. That was a time before 24-hour cable and the Internet, a time when people watched the same TV program at the same time. And most of America watched "Uncle Walter" deliver the news of the day.

Gov. Abbott Announces 11 Counties Added To Federal Disaster Declaration For April-June Severe Weather

July 16, 2024 - Governor Greg Abbott today announced that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has approved 11 additional Texas counties for the federal disaster declaration for the severe weather and flooding that began on April 26 and occurred through June 5. With this FEMA approval of 11 new counties for Public Assistance programs, qualifying entities in 69 total counties are now eligible to apply.

N.E.W. Water System Rescinds Boil Water Notice

The water on N.E.W. WSC no longer requires boiling.

July 15, 2024 - On July 9, 2024, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality required the N.E.W. Water Supply, #2030034, to issue a Boil Water Notice to inform customers, individuals or employees that due to conditions which occurred recently in the public water system, the water from this public water system was required to be boiled prior to use for drinking water or human consumption purposes.

July 12, 2024 - Good Morning! It's Friday, July 12.

I first met Alice West in 2017, when I arrived in Center, Texas as Worship Minister at First Baptist Church. She was our organist and she welcomed me to town with a warm smile and a kind word. It made me feel special. But then I noticed that that was the way Alice greeted everyone, and it was the way she greeted me hundreds of times over the last seven years.

Harris Fund Accepting Applications from Shelby County Nonprofits

July 11, 2024 - The John Harris Community Fund held at East Texas Communities Foundation (ETCF) in Tyler, Texas, will be accepting grant applications now through 5pm July 15, 2024

“John Reagan Harris was a generous benefactor, giving both his time and his resources to many groups and worthy causes in and around Center,” said Kyle Penney, President of East Texas Communities Foundation.
