Shelby County Jumps to 85 Confirmed COVID-19 Cases with 16 New

April 23, 2020 - Shelby County Office of Emergency Management was notified by Texas Dept. of State Health Services (DSHS) on April 22nd of 16 more positive confirmed cases of COVID-19 bringing the total case count for Shelby County to 85. 

Information on hospitalizations is still unknown on all the positive confirmed cases but we do have definitive confirmation that 10 of these 85 were hospitalized. No official information is available to us on whether any of these individuals are still hospitalized or not

NWS Issues Severe Thunderstorm Warning; Thunderstorm Located Near Bland Lake

April 22, 2020 - At 4:27pm CDT, the National Weather Service in Shreveport has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Northwestern Sabine Parish in northwestern Louisiana, Southern Shelby County in eastern Texas, Northern San Augustine County in eastern Texas, and Northwestern Sabine County in eastern Texas until 5:15pm CDT.

At 4:26pm CDT, a severe thunderstorm was located near Bland Lake, or 12 miles south of Center, moving east at 45 mph with two inch hail and 70 mph wind gusts.

Tornado Warning for Portions of Shelby County, Nearby Areas

April 22, 2020 - The National Weather Service in Shreveport has issued a Tornado Warning for Central Nacogdoches County in eastern Texas, Southwestern Shelby County in eastern Texas, North central Angelina County in eastern Texas, Northwestern San Augustine County in eastern Texas until 4:30pm CDT.

At 3:42 PM CDT, a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was located 8 miles east of Pollok, or 9 miles southwest of Nacogdoches, moving east at 45 mph.

HAZARD: Tornado and tennis ball size hail.

Shelby County Remains Under Tornado Watch

April 22, 2020 - Tornado watch 133 is in effect until 5pm cdt for the following locations:

Texas counties included are Anderson, Angelina, Austin, Bastrop,  Brazos,  Burleson, Caldwell, Cherokee Falls, Fayette,  Freestone, Grimes, Houston, Jasper, Lee, Leon, Limestone, Madison, Milam, Montgomery, Nacogdoches, Newton, Panola, Polk, Robertson, Rusk, Sabine, San Augustine, San Jacinto, Shelby, Travis, Trinity, Tyler, Walker,   Waller, Washington, Williamson

Texas Observer Publishes Article Concerning Spread of COVID-19 at Meat Plants (Updated)

April 22, 2020 - The Texas Observer published an article about COVID-19 and its spread among employees of meat plants in rural Texas counties mentioning the Tyson poultry processing plant in Shelby County.

On a Facebook post made on Tyson Foods - Center, TX page, the plant advised it would be shutdown this week due to a construction project. The City of Center did confirm the construction project was planned for this week for well over 3 months as the city has scheduled maintence on the water system to happen during the plants shutdown.

Judge Harbison Updates Commissioners on COVID Cases, Military Involvement (Updated)

April 22, 2020 - The Shelby County Commissioners met Wednesday, April 22, 2020, via Zoom and during the meeting County Judge Allison Harbison informed that military doctors will soon be in the area to offer a drive through testing site in Center.

“We had 69 confirmed positive, we had six people that actually have gone through the process and have recovered and got off of the list. We still have 10 that may be in the hospital, and we've had no deaths reported," said Judge Harbison.

County Appoints Dr. Singson Local Health Authority

April 21, 2020 - Shelby County Commissioners approved the appointment of Dr. Florencio Singson, MD as the Shelby County Local Health Authority on April 15, 2020.

Department of State Health Services contacted Judge Allison Harbison on the need for there to be a designated Shelby County Local Health Authority.

Dr. Florencio Singson has been designated that for several years. Due to an oversight, Judge Harbison explained the appointment ran out.
